Naomi Goodsir Nuit de Bakelite ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 23 August 2017 24 Comments

When it comes to perfume inspirations, designer Naomi Goodsir had an original one: bakelite — one of the first plastics. I admit to laughing as I read Nuit de Bakélite1 PR materials (Goodsir collects bakelite objects). But who am I to laugh? I’d happily work with perfumer Isabelle Doyen myself if she’d help me turn some favorite things into gorgeous perfume. Isabelle, let’s create Jour d’Essence de Térébenthine2or La Grotte des Boules de Mites3. Just this week Angela here at NST reviewed a perfume made with concrete in mind!

Bakelite is, in fact, an honored substance…

Gucci Bloom ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 16 August 2017 18 Comments

Gucci Bloom

Bloom1 is one of the first two Gucci fragrances conceptualized by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. As with Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme, Michele worked with perfumer Alberto Morillas. In each of these fragrances, Morillas used a new, “natural” ingredient; Guilty Absolute Pour Homme contains an extract of Nootka cypress and Bloom presents Rangoon creeper (“harvested” via headspace technology in India — so claims Gucci).

Etat Libre d’Orange Vierges et Toreros ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 December 2016 18 Comments

tuberose and bullfighter

Almost ten years have passed since Etat Libre d’Orange released Vierges et Toreros.1 I’ve never come across it in a store and no one ever gave me a sample of the fragrance. The only reason I just smelled it is that I got a tiny vial of the perfume along with the recent Etat Libre d’Orange Attaquer Le Soleil Marquis de Sade release. I ignored Vierges et Toreros all these years because bullfighter images aren’t my thing, and people I trust gave it lukewarm reviews. I never added it to my to-try list. Mistake!

As usual the Etat Libre d’Orange PR text is worth reading for a good laugh and head-scratch…

2 for Tuesday: Tauerville Tuberose Flash & Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2016 24 Comments

Brief reviews of two recent-ish indie / niche fragrances: Tauerville Tuberose Flash and Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig.

If you’ve smelled anything recently that we should all know about, do add your own brief review in the comments!

Tauerville Tuberose Flash

Tauerville Tuberose Flash

When I reviewed Tauer’s Sotto La Luna Tuberose, I said “it smells to me like tuberose right away, and it goes on smelling like tuberose straight through, and more so than usual, a blow-by-blow of the proceedings seems pointless”. I could say the same of Tuberose Flash…
