Naughty or nice

Posted by Robin on 15 August 2007 13 Comments

But does his scent Tuscan Leather actually smell like cocaine? Well, according to cognoscenti of that drug, yes, a bit. “That’s what everyone says,” admits a counterboy at the Ford store on Madison, who adds that one customer even bought a bottle because he thought it smelled like coke.

— Columnist Geoffrey Gray of New York Magazine asks Is it naughty or just coincidental that (according to some) one of Tom Ford’s colognes smells like cocaine? Thanks to Christopher Peterson for the link!

Le Labo, Anderson Cooper

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2007 10 Comments

Now, just 18 months after opening, fully half of Le Labo’s customers are men, and Rose 31 is its best-selling fragrance. What is even more surprising to Mr. Penot, as well as to others in the slow-to-change men’s fragrance market, is how one group of guys in particular, young men in their 20s, is shaking up the hidebound (and hide-scented) formulas that have held sway for decades.

— From Younger, and Faster to Pick Up the Scent in today's New York Times.

We recently revealed that Tom Ford asked Anderson to become the spokesperson for a new cologne he's creating that he wanted to name after Cooper, but Anderson turned him down. Anderson told his fashion maven mom Gloria Vanderbilt about the offer and she LIKED the idea and pushed her son to give it some more thought.

— What the world needs now: an Anderson Cooper fragrance. The quote is from Janet Charleton's Hollywood, found via TowleRoad, found via Ruth (thanks!).

Yves Saint Laurent Nu perfume review

Yves Saint Laurent Nu fragrance

Has anyone else noticed the explosion of incense fragrances over the past decade? In past years, incense seemed to play a backstage role. Sure, the old classics Creed Angélique Encens, Chanel No. 22, and Lanvin Scandal all have incense, but a trip to the perfume counter these days gives you the choice of at least a dozen fragrances featuring incense front and center, from the Comme de Garçons incense series to L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer and Dzongka to Etro Messe de Minuit to incense “soliflores”, if you can call them that, from Lorenzo Villoresi, Crazylibellule and the Poppies and others. One incense-based fragrance that stands apart from the crowd is Yves Saint Laurent Nu…

Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 21 March 2007 26 Comments

Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent

Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent is part of this year’s Tom Ford Estee Lauder Collection, and will launch as a limited edition this coming April. Other than the inspiration (“the Mediterranean near Mrs. Estée Lauder’s vacation home in Cap d’Antibes, off the coast of France”), it has nothing in common with the original 1969 Azuree fragrance from Estee Lauder. The notes include tiare (gardenia), orange blossom, jasmine, magnolia petals, myrrh, bergamot, mandarin, amber, sandalwood, vetiver, caramel and coconut cream.

I have said before that I’m not a big fan of tropical-beachy or suntan oil scents, and so when the Azuree Soleil Body Oil was released last year, I didn’t rush to try it. By the time I got around to giving it a sniff, all the stores were sold out. Even then, the little tiny sample I managed to snag didn’t make much of an impression on me. Still, everyone else raved about it so I was curious about the new Eau Fraiche Skinscent…
