Friday scent of the day 6/20

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2025 233 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Summer Solstice! It’s also World Refugee Day and National Ice Cream Soda Day. Our community project for today: celebrate Brian Wilson’s birthday (and the summer solstice) by scenting a Beach Boys song, or honor Brian Wilson with your fragrance in any other way you see fit.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

If you asked me to name my top 20 recording artists, The Beach Boys would not make the cut. I like their music well enough but they get only a tiny fraction of my listening time. That said, I do think Brian Wilson crafted at least two, maybe three, of what I’d call the Top 10 Perfect Pop songs, and without hesitation I’d put God Only Knows at spot #1 (and I’m not alone). Carl Wilson sings lead, but it’s Brian Wilson’s genius as a writer, producer and arranger that makes the song “one of the most complex—and beautiful—songs in the annals of American popular music”. The only thing I could think of to match it (that I was willing to wear on a hot June Day) was Diorissimo…

Thursday scent of the day 6/19

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2025 127 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Juneteenth! Birthdays: Blaise Pascal, Lou Gehrig, Pauline Kael, Salman Rushdie, Ann Wilson. What fragrance are you wearing?

Today I’m trying to pair the 1966 song Good Vibrations, which Wikipedia tells us was “the costliest and longest-to-record pop single at the time” and “one of the most influential pop recordings in history”. Every perfume I thought of seemed inadequate to the soaring vocal harmonies so I decided to concentrate on the lyric “a blossom world we find”, and I’m in the lovely blossom world of Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: 6/20 is Brian Wilson’s birthday (and the summer solstice)…

Wednesday scent of the day 6/18

It’s Hump Day, Waterloo Day, International Sushi Day and Autistic Pride Day. Happy 83rd birthday to Paul McCartney! What fragrance are you wearing?

My song pick today is the pop masterpiece Wouldn’t It Be Nice, from the 1966 Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Pure joy, and I’m wearing Aftelier Candide to match.

Reminder: 6/20 is Brian Wilson’s birthday (and the summer solstice)…

Tuesday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2025 110 Comments

It’s (teapotless, I will do two teapots next week to make up for it) Tuesday, plus the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. What fragrance are you wearing?

Most of my favorite Beach Boys songs are from Pet Sounds, but I’m starting with an earlier song, Don’t Worry Baby, from 1964. It was included on my first Beach Boys music purchase, the 1974 double album compilation Endless Summer. Don’t Worry Baby was written by Brian Wilson with Roger Christian, with Wilson taking the lead vocal. While it’s not entirely an upbeat song, it still gives me an instant happy summer feel. So I’m in a happy summer favorite, Carthusia Mediterraneo.

Reminder: 6/20 is Brian Wilson’s birthday (and the summer solstice)…

Friday scent of the day 6/13

Posted by Robin on 13 June 2025 128 Comments

It’s Friday the 13th and World Softball Day. Birthdays: W. B. Yeats, Dorothy L. Sayers. Our community project for today: wear an incense fragrance, if you have one. (This is a repeat; thanks go to ringthing for the suggestion!)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I’m in Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate, which I included in 5 perfumes: incense fragrances for summer…
