Friday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2017 341 Comments

Hey, it’s Skank Friday! Our community project for today: wear something skanky.* (If you need help, try here or here.) Thanks to Dawn and Ihadanidea for the idea!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I’m practicing for our upcoming Reeking Havoc project — on one arm, I’ve got the old civet standby, Guerlain Jicky, in vintage Extrait. On the other, the indolic Tawaf from La Via del Profumo. I smell just gorgeous…

Lazy weekend poll ~ skank, episode 2

Posted by Robin on 9 September 2017 297 Comments

By request, a repeat of a poll we did in 2010. The subject: skanky perfumes. From A Perfumista lexicon:

Skanky: a fragrance with animalic or other “sexy” notes. Skanky has pejorative connotations in “regular” slang, but among many perfumistas, it is meant as a compliment. The use of the term to apply to perfume was popularized by March at Perfume Posse.

We’ll have a skanky Friday project coming up soon, so consider this some advance planning. Tell us…

1. What’s your favorite skanky perfume?

2. What perfume do you think would be a perfect “introduction to skank”?

3. Are there any perfumes that are just too skanky for you to wear?

Or, anything else you’d like to tell us on the subject of skank in perfume. Or, as always, just talk about something else…

My husband and I buy used books rather than new ones whenever we can. Most of the furniture in our home is older than we are. I spend my workdays thinking and talking about art history, with an emphasis on the “history” part. Many of my perfumes, not surprisingly, also tend towards the “retro.”

Indie line Dawn Spencer Hurwitz recently launched Rendezvous, a fragrance that’s a throwback to the animalic perfumes of the mid-twentieth century, and naturally I was curious…

5 Perfumes: A Skank Sampler

Posted by Angela on 12 October 2015 317 Comments

skank sampler

Ready to wade into skanky waters but want a little hand holding? You’ve come to the right place. “Skank”1 usually refers to a hint — and sometimes more — of body odor in a fragrance, occasionally with overtones of halitosis and rotting flesh. (I hope you aren’t eating lunch right now.) Artfully administered, skank can throw a perfume’s beauty into relief. It can feel intimate and sexy. But when you’re not in the mood for it, skank could be just plain disgusting. Skank tolerance is personal. Some perfumistas wear their skank as a badge of honor, like chile lovers brag about downing Scotch Bonnets, but others won’t tolerate a noticeable drop of civet or funky musk.

Here is a skank sampler. Please comment if other skanky perfumes come to mind. I’ve rated them on a Skank Scale of one to ten. One approximates “post-tennis glow,” and ten is “zombie apocalypse…”
