Coffee, coffee, coffee ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 5 October 2008 24 Comments

I’ve written before about my love for coffee, both as a beverage and as a fragrance. I’m always surprised that more coffee-scented body products don’t exist. Surely I’m not the only person who loves this smell so much? For anyone who shares my obsession, here’s a summary of a few high-quality toiletries that include actual coffee for its smell as well as its other benefits.

Lush’s Sonic Death Monkey Shower Gel (shown above, middle) looks like something you could drizzle over ice cream, and it smells like a drink that would set you back about $7 at Starbucks: a potent mocha blend of coffee and chocolate, with a shot of orange syrup…

Roger & Gallet Cherry Tomato Bath & Shower Gel ~ scented body products

Posted by Pia on 14 September 2008 21 Comments

Roger & Gallet Tomato shower gelThe other morning, as I was pulling out of my driveway, I happened to notice the charming scene of my neighbor across the street watering some tall green plants in her backyard with a great big watering can. I can't be sure, but from a distance they looked like large leafy tomato plants. I was reminded of my own adventures in trying to grow tomatoes; one year I had cherry tomatoes which gave me plenty of fruit but none of it very good, and so the next year I tried the larger kind, which proceeded to overwhelm my garden with their large stalk-y bases and profuse green leaves. They also attracted some extremely odd looking (and rather large) caterpillars who took shelter in the dark shade provided by the plants, and which gave me a queasy feeling whenever I tried to pick a tomato. Whatever the reason, once again, the fruit was mealy and the skin too tough, and so this year I decided that perhaps my climate is not the best for tomatoes and to forego them altogether.

Unexpectedly, the joy of lush ripe tomatoes found another way of appearing, in the form of Roger & Gallet's Cherry Tomato Bath & Shower Gel. I picked up this little body wash on sale early in the summer…

Red Flower Ocean Purifying Body Wash and Moisturizing Lotion

Posted by Jessica on 17 August 2008 4 Comments

Red Flower Ocean body products

All the scents in Red Flower’s revamped (or “recrafted”) Flower Skin line are named for specific flowers or fruits, with the exception of Ocean. Red Flower doesn’t give the notes for this fragrance; instead, Ocean is simply described as “a vast scent that opens the lungs and cools the skin.” It seems to be dominated by an intense dose of eucalyptus, or some fragrant variety of laurel, with subtle notes of mint and something kelp-like below the cleansing, camphorous heart of the fragrance.

According to the Red Flower website, Ocean Body Wash (shown) and Moisturizing Lotion are both concocted from “organic flowers, bio-dynamic honey, and wild-crafted botanical extracts.” The Body Wash actually looks and feels like honey, and its ingredients list also includes spirulina (an algae rich in fatty acids and other nutrients). When I use the Body Wash in the shower (lots of lather!), or even just to wash my hands at the sink, I can feel Ocean’s essential oils clearing my head…

Roger & Gallet’s Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream, and some thoughts on linden

Posted by Pia on 1 June 2008 40 Comments

Linden blossoms

I first became aware of the delightful scent of linden blossom some years ago. I was having a lovely stroll in a nearby park, and as I meandered under the cover of some stately trees, a fresh and sweetly honeyed-green fragrance surrounded me, blending with the dappled late afternoon sunlight and the grounding scent of warm scuffed earth and stone. I later discovered that this was the well known linden blossom, lime blossom, or tilleul. It fast became a favorite of mine, particularly in home fragrances and body products. Quietly refreshing, its limber green structure is interwoven with a hint of tang and a gentle airy sweetness. In home fragrances in particular, I find it has a charm that is both elegant and fresh.

One of my all-time favorite linden body products is the Roger & Gallet Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream. Part of their Gentle Nature collection, this shower cream is enriched with shea milk…

Fresh Cannabis Rose Eau de Parfum, Bath & Shower Gel, and Body Cream ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 27 April 2008 29 Comments

Fresh Cannabis Rose fragrance

Fresh is promoting Cannabis Rose, their latest fragrance release, as the sensual, seductive partner to 2006’s male-targeted Cannabis Santal. When I first sampled Cannabis Santal, I thought of Linda Richman (Mike Myers) from the old “Coffee Talk” sketch on Saturday Night Live, who would have said, “Cannabis Santal is neither cannabis nor santal. Discuss.” Instead, that fragrance was a chocolate-patchouli cousin to Thierry Mugler’s Angel, and it sold well with women as well as men.

Cannabis Rose gives a more typically feminine first impression: a winsome burst of fruity rose, similar to many fruity-rose notes on the market today. However, this citrusy floral introduction only lasts for a minute or two. The fragrance’s extended heart is a musky cluster of patchouli leaves. It’s still not a literal translation of marijuana, but it’s herbal enough to feel a bit rebellious. (The promised chocolate note isn’t evident, which is fine with me; without it, Cannabis Rose can move further away from Angel-imitation.) This scent is odder and trickier than its demurely arty packaging (delicate scrollwork, stylized rose blossoms) would suggest. A darker rose note emerges late in the drydown, marrying the patchouli and “oolong tea” in an earthy bouquet with poetically wilted petals…
