Scent is being mined as a new focal point of interaction

Though it didn’t make the final cut, designers for the newest Xbox One controller reportedly considered a smell feature. At last year’s CES, Game accessory maker SensoryAcumen showed off the unfortunately named GameSkunk, a device that promised to add some flavor to games, such as the pong of gasoline as a Humvee rolls past...GameSkunk also never made it to market.

 These early experiments in “smellables” may be part stunt, part speculation, but scent is being mined as a new focal point of interaction for companies looking to break through a cluttered communication environment.

Hints of chocolate, oakmoss, and peppermint

Ocean Bank, for example, went for “a premium fragrance that begins with mouthwatering mandarin, fresh watery ozone, and green cardamom notes, supported by black pepper and musk,” says Dublino. Helm Bank’s l’essence, developed as part of a complete sensory rebranding, includes hints of chocolate, oakmoss, and peppermint.

A scent meant to evoke a seaside vacation

The changing rooms look like cabanas, beach sounds waft from the speaker system, and the imaging machine is disguised as a giant sand castle. The piece de resistance? The place is perfumed with Ocean Breeze, a scent meant to evoke a seaside vacation.
