Remarkable objects used for la toilette

Posted by Robin on 15 February 2019 2 Comments

Hillwood’s founder, Marjorie Merriweather Post, focused on acquiring magnificent pieces of eighteenth-century French decorative arts, which she valued for their exquisite designs and historic associations, during the first half of the twentieth century and many remarkable objects used for la toilette made it into her collection. Perfume & Seduction will trace the form and function of perfume bottles, explore a variety of shapes and materials and the process of making perfume, and examine the evolution of forms during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, highlighting examples from Hillwood’s collection.

— The exhibit Perfume & Seduction opens this weekend, and runs through June 9, at the Hillwood Museum in Washington, DC. Hat tip to my mom!

Mille Facettes

The installation, called Mille Facettes—A Thousand Facets of Olfactory Lights, was presented as an artistic interpretation of the new fragrance, purporting to take the visitor for some 90 seconds inside a diamond, or more accurately inside a Plexiglas box in which a white light was diffused into a million facets of colors, plunging the visitor into the creative mind of the perfumer.

— Cartier's pop-up installation for Carat can be found at the Cartier pop-up shop on Wooster Street in NYC, or at rue Vieille du Temple in Paris. Read more in At Its ‘Rendez-Vous’ Experience, Cartier Mines the Past and Present to Reinvent Classic Luxury at ArtNet.

An original and sensorial discovery

Bringing together close to 110 art and archaeology objects together for the first time, it will take you on a journey through Chinese civilisation. A selection of ceramics, drawings, bronzes, and paintings from the collections of the Shanghai Museum is presented for the first time in Europe alongside some twenty pieces from the Musée Cernuschi collections. These exceptional loans will immerse visitors in an original and sensorial discovery of the museum, punctuated with olfactory experiences throughout the chronological progression of the exhibition.

— The exhibit "Perfumes of China, the culture of incense in imperial times" will be open through 26 August at the Musée Cernuschi in Paris, and includes historical fragrances recreated by Dior.

A first sensory experience of antiquity based on scent

Three fragrances – rose, coriander and sage – were created for what museum officials are calling a first sensory experience of antiquity based on scent.

The archaeological experiment required 18 months of research, both in and outside the laboratory, said Korres, the Greek natural cosmetic firm tasked with reviving the “primordial, one-dimensional” perfumes.

These sculptures hide secrets

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2018 4 Comments

Sissel Tolaas’s work is more subtle but it’s one of the most innovative – and surprising – pieces in the whole show. It’s a series of small, white, abstract sculptures equally spaced across four walls. These sculptures hide secrets. Each is imbued with scent, which triggers a memory or a feeling or, sometimes, an acute physical reaction.

— Scent artist Sissel Tolaas collected smells from Melbourne, and is now exhibiting them at the NGV Triennial, which runs until April 15 at the National Gallery of Victoria. Read more at Smelling Art with Sissel Tolaas at Broadsheet Melbourne, or find out more about the Triennial here.
