A fragrant atmosphere

Posted by Robin on 13 April 2022 Leave a Comment

The fragrance that has been created by IFF to accompany the portrait is a typical formula for a pomander from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It includes nutmeg, cloves, rosemary, cinnamon, rose, ambergris (produced in the bowels of the sperm whale), and civet (produced in the perineal glands of the civet cat). Certain ingredients were expensive, as nutmeg and cloves were imported from south-east Asia, and ambergris was very rare. The pomander in Besserer’s portrait creates a fragrant atmosphere for his worship, and it magnifies his status through the precious ingredients.

— Follow Your Nose: a Guided Tour with Smells is now open at Museum Ulm in Germany; the pomander scent was created for Portrait of Eitel Besserer. Read more in NOW OPEN: Follow your Nose at Museum Ulm at Odeuropa.

A hot stinky hit of civet

The fruits of his labour can be sampled from the four diffusers that sit in room 83 of the Prado, delivering their carefully calibrated perfumes at the touch of a screen. As well as jasmine, rose, spikenard, fig tree, orange blossom, daffodil, a bouquet of rose, jasmine and carnation, there is iris – and kid gloves scented with amber.

While Sola opted not to conjure up the smell of the guinea pigs, the peacocks or the hound who has muzzled his way into the picture, he did recreate the scent of the civet who lies coiled in its bottom right-hand corner. Puig’s diffusers dispense a hot stinky hit of civet, which, thankfully, soon fades out.

— Gregorio Sola, Puig’s senior perfumer, creates fragrances for the painting The Sense of Smell, by Jan Brueghel and Rubens. A smell truly worthy of a pandemic

The first, vanillin, is a synthetic vanilla extract devised by German scientists in the 19th century that became an important ingredient in what is widely regarded as the first modern perfume: Guerlain’s Jicky. Two other diffusers dispense Calone, a popular perfume ingredient devised in 1951 that evokes marine qualities with undertones of melon (think commercial “ocean breeze” products), and Flowerpool, an antiseptic scent that was trademarked this year — and is a smell truly worthy of a pandemic.

Five Echoes

[Artist and stage designer Es] Devlin and Chanel will transform the plaza into a multisensory labyrinth entitled “Five Echoes,” starting with a lush forest with more than 20 plant species (a nod to Coco Chanel’s upbringing in Abbey of Aubazine surrounded by woods). A luminescent sculpture that interprets the legendary Chanel N° 5 fragrance through sound and sight emerges at the center of the forest, featuring a soundscape developed in collaboration with Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge.

— After Rockefeller Center, Chanel heads to Miami for a gig at Art Basel, to run through December 21. Read more in Chanel Unveils “Five Echoes” Installation With Artist Es Devlin at Grazia, or see Six must-see public art installations of Art Basel 2021 at Timeout.

— In honor of No. 5, Chanel will take over portions of Rockefeller Center from November 6 to 12; read more in Chanel Honors 100th Anniversary Of Famed N°5 Perfume at Gotham.
