The smell of fresh wet grass and damp earth

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2024 Leave a Comment

Sir John Everett Millais’s The Blind Girl from 1854-56 – showing a blind girl and her companion resting beside a meadow beneath dark rain clouds and a double rainbow– will be accompanied by the smell of fresh wet grass and damp earth, evoking English countryside after the rain.

One of Leonardo’s designs for a burning device was modeled after a bird known as an oiselet de cyphre. The exhibition features a modern reconstruction, displayed alongside the artist’s writings. Visitors can also smell the black, amber necklace worn by the woman depicted in his 1489 painting Lady with an Ermine, which gives off a sweet, earthy odor.

The scents landed on the wrong part of my brain

Maybe it was just me, but the scents landed on the wrong part of my brain, knocking on reason’s door. Scriabin leaves you with enough questions as it is, and here were more. Salonen’s and Thibaudet’s sensational performance of “Prometheus” — transparent, nuanced and colorful — had no need for further tickling the senses.

— From a review of the San Francisco Symphony's production of  Scriabin’s “Prometheus, The Poem of Fire,” scented by perfumer Mathilde Laurent. Read more in Symphony, scents in San Francisco: Does adding smells to performance make sense? at The Los Angeles Times.

The diffusers were timed to match the music

Onstage, the pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet practiced his solo part in “Prometheus,” which the San Francisco Symphony will perform March 1 through 3, while the conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen listened attentively to the wooden vortexes as they were being tested; the sound they made while emitting smoke, he noticed, was nearly a G.

Mathilde Laurent, Cartier’s longtime perfumer, who had designed the scents, double-checked notes on her iPad. For this day’s test, without the orchestra, she wanted to be sure the diffusers were timed to match the music. So they were going to play a recording overhead.

The Lucky Chance diner

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2023 5 Comments

There’s nothing quite like moseying into a New York City diner for a juicy burger and crisp French fries, but have you ever been to a diner and been served … fragrance? Probably not. Chanel is taking over a diner in Williamsburg — 225 Wythe Avenue — to celebrate its nostalgic Chance fragrance.

— The Lucky Chance diner will be open in Brooklyn from September 8 through the 10th. Read more in Would You Eat Chanel Perfume? at The Cut, or make your reservation here.
