Posted by Robin on 21 December 2009 50 Comments

It has taken me three years to decide on the scent because I really like B.O. and I think it's sexy. I wanted to figure out a way to make it palatable to everybody.

— Sarah Jessica Parker, quoted in PARKER WORKING ON TOP SECRET B.O. FRAGRANCE at Contact Music.

SJP Covet Pure Bloom fragrance

Sarah Jessica Parker’s latest is Covet Pure Bloom, the first (and if I had to guess, the last*) flanker to last year’s Covet fragrance. Covet may or not be discontinued, but it has disappeared from several department stores so I can only assume that it was not the instant crowd pleaser that Lovely was.

Covet’s opening was more challenging than Lovely’s, and to my mind, it was considerably more challenging on paper than it was on skin — on a test strip, it was very lemony-green and sharp and reminiscent of citronella, and it stayed that way a good long time. I didn’t think of it as a wildly risky fragrance, but perhaps anything that isn’t an instant crowd pleaser (especially on paper) is risky given today’s competitive celebrity fragrance market.

Enter Covet Pure Bloom. I sort of expected Covet Pure Bloom to be the pinkified, floralated version of Covet, with the challenging parts tamped down…

"What are you wearing?" I ask. "You smell so good."

"I do? I'm so pleased," 43-year-old Parker says, eyes wide, smile beaming. "It's my genderless fragrance."

This will be Parker's third perfume when the as-yet unnamed scent hits stores, further proof Sarah Jessica the brand has meshed seamlessly with Sarah Jessica the actor.

— From an interview with Sarah Jessica Parker in The Star. Keep your fingers crossed!

Floris, one of the oldest perfumers in the world, will do one for just £2,500. I made an appointment with Shelagh Foyle, who is what Floris rather grandly calls its “perfumer laureate” (020-7747 3600).
