Perfume review: Montale Aoud Roses Petals

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2005 31 Comments

Rose petals, Grasse

I have tried quite a few Montale fragrances since I posted about Patchouli Leaves back in March, but have learned nothing more about the house or its history, so can only repeat what I said then: Montale is a Paris-based perfumer with two lines: an oudh line based on the precious oudh (or agar) wood frequently used in Middle Eastern fragrances, and a regular perfume line. Today I am wearing Aoud Roses Petals, which features notes of oudh, teak, and rose.

Roses Petals starts with a delicate and soft rosewater, which is almost instantly buried under a haze of oudh. The first blast of oudh is often described as medicinal, and that is probably accurate although I don’t find it unpleasant exactly. Certainly it is pungent…

He says/She Says: Hermessence Collection Rose Ikebana

Hermes Rose Ikebana perfumeHermes Rose Ikebana perfumeHermes Rose Ikebana perfume

Once again, Marlen is joining me. Today we are bickering about Rose Ikebana, one of the scents in the Hermessence collection, a quartet of unisex fragrances created by Hermès house nose Jean Claude Ellena and released in 2004. Each perfume is meant to evoke a particular fabric: Rose Ikebana is silk, Poivre Samarcande is velvet, Vetiver Tonka is wool, and Ambre Narguile is cashmere. Hermès has said there will be more to come in the series, and it is rumored that the next perfume will be based on leather. Rose Ikebana has notes of rose tea, infusion of petals, peony, magnolia, pink peppercorn, zest of grapefruit, rhubarb and vanilla honey.

He says: Rose Ikebana was created to reflect the touch of silk on the skin, but in my opinion, is nothing more than another bland and uninspired floral. Yes, it is pretty. Yes, it is soft. Yes, it is silky. But is it new? Is it groundbreaking? Does it scream “Buy me?” I don’t know folks…there are so many rose scents on the market these days, that it is surprising to see yet one more, perhaps less interesting than the rest and yet more expensive…

Fragrance review: Yuzu Rouge by Parfums 06130

Posted by Robin on 20 May 2005 19 Comments

yuzu06130-yuzuyuzu

Yuzu Rouge was created for Parfums Zero Six Cent-Trente by perfumer Raphael Haury, and the fragrance notes are yuzu, grapefruit, bergamot, cardamom, cassis, verbena, rose, nutmeg, amber, moss, and musk.

Yuzu Rouge starts as a sparkling citrus rose scent with a hint of cassis, and it is essentially linear, so it pretty much stays that way while it lasts. The rose not nearly as pronounced as it is in Parfums de Rosine Un Zeste de Rose…

Perfume review: Les Parfums de Rosine Une Folie de Rose

Posted by Robin on 30 April 2005 14 Comments

rosine

Une Folie de Rose is the latest release from Les Parfums de Rosine, and has notes of coriander, bergamot, rose, ylang-ylang, jasmine, sandalwood, amber, oakmoss, vetiver, and patchouli.

Une Folie starts out very dense and sweet, and for a few minutes I thought this might have more patchouli and ylang ylang than I could stand. Both notes calm nicely, leaving a softly spicy floral chypre; the rose is blended with the other floral notes and does not stand out on its own as much as it does in many of the other Rosines…

Creed Fleur de The Rose Bulgare ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 17 April 2005 24 Comments

Creed Fleur de Thé Rose Bulgare

Creed was established in London in 1760, and has been passed down within the Creed family ever since. It is currently owned by sixth generation perfumer Olivier Creed, and will reportedly be passed in turn to his son Erwin. Original Vetiver, the unisex scent released in 2004, was the first Creed fragrance developed jointly by Olivier and Erwin.

Fleur de Thé Rose Bulgare may have been created in 1890, as perfumeworld suggests, or it may have been created in 1959 for Natalie Wood, as escentual claims, or perhaps it was Ava Gardner…
