Perfume review: Paula Dorf Zita

Posted by Robin on 13 February 2006 13 Comments

Paula Dorf Zita fragrance

Paula Dorf started as a make-up artist and eventually launched her own line of color cosmetics in 1997. Her first (and so far, only) fragrance, Zita, was released in 2003. It was created by perfumers Cecile Krakower and Ralf Schwieger, and has notes of tea rose, fresh cut grass, freesia, galbanum, peach, pink peony, iris, sandalwood and musk:

“I had this vision of walking with my mom as a little girl,” said Dorf, who noted that childhood memories were the main inspiration for Zita, which is also her middle name.”The smell of the grass, the flowers, I’ve always had that scent in me.” (via Womens Wear Daily, 1/31/2003)

Zita starts as a very green, very grassy floral…

A blast from the past: Tea Rose by The Perfumer’s Workshop

Posted by Robin on 20 January 2006 20 Comments

Tea Rose by The Perfumer's Workshop

Tea Rose was launched by The Perfumer’s Workshop around 1975, and in my mind it is forever associated with that era. It was part of my regular fragrance rotation for many years, along with Diorissimo and the original Halston.

It was a very popular perfume at one time. Nicole Kidman made a bit of a stir by wearing it to the Oscars in 2004 when she had just been named the new face of Chanel no. 5, but otherwise you don’t hear about it much these days. I can’t remember when I stopped wearing it, but I do remember buying Yves Saint Laurent Paris shortly after it was released in the early 1980s, and at that time, it would certainly never have occurred to me to own two bottles of perfume featuring the same floral note…

Stella McCartney Stella and Stella Rose Absolute ~ perfume reviews

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2006 33 Comments

Stella by Stella McCartney, perfume advert

Stella McCartney released her first fragrance, called simply Stella, in 2003:

I wanted to capture the fragility of the high summer rose when the petals are just about to fall off. It’s not about skipping around the country in a frilly skirt on a summer day.

Stella was created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier, and the notes are rose essence, peony, mandarin, rose absolute and amber. The fragrance starts out with dewy florals and crisp citrus; the end-of-summer fragility McCartney was looking for doesn’t become apparent until the dry down, when the florals are joined by a woody-musky amber…

Cuir Beluga, Rose Barbare & Angelique Noire: Guerlain L’Art et la Matiere

Guerlain Cuir Beluga, Rose Barbare & Angelique Noire

L’Art et la Matière is a trio of fragrances released earlier this year to coincide with the opening of Guerlain’s newly refurbished flagship boutique. The perfumes were “curated” by Sylvaine Delacourte, Guerlain’s director of fragrance development. Three noses were asked to create fragrances, or, to quote the press release, to “freely express passion for an original, precious raw material”.

Olivier Polge has taken on leather, and the result is Cuir Beluga, with notes of mandarin orange, immortelle flower, leather, amber, heliotrope and vanilla…
