Home fragrance report: Mizensir Rose Blanche candle

Posted by Pia on 11 February 2007 6 Comments

Mizensir Rose Blanche scented candleI knew I had found a treasure as soon as I opened the outer packaging of Mizensir’s Rose Blanche candle. Before even opening the box, I was gifted with a gentle beckoning of soft rose whispers, and my mood settled and calmed as I unwrapped the soft pink tissue.

Unlit, Rose Blanche offers a subtle invitation to the heart of a white rose, still covered in morning dew. According to the Mizensir copy, the candle embodies the 'delicacy of rose petals with peppery and velvety notes'. It has an elegant simplicity and exudes an aura of innocence and purity. There is no trace of an earthy or sultry rose attar…

Vera Wang Truly Pink ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2007 26 Comments

Vera Wang Truly Pink

Vera Wang has expanded into a lifestyle brand, selling everything from jewelry to sunglasses to shoes, but she is still best known for the bridal gowns that launched her eponymous fashion business in 1990. Truly Pink is her fifth and latest fragrance, debuting 5 years after her initial effort, Vera Wang for women. The notes include white freesia, cassis, lychee blossom, peony, pink rose accord, creamy woods, iris and violet wood.

You would expect a perfume from a bridal designer to be unabashedly romantic and perhaps a bit conservative, and that is exactly what you’ll get with Truly Pink…

Parfums de Nicolai Balkis & Balkis Light ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 22 January 2007 17 Comments

Parfums de Nicolai Balkis perfume

Balkis was launched by Parfums de Nicolaï in 2003, and the notes include raspberry, Turkish rose, black pepper, coffee extract, iris, benzoin and vanilla.

Balkis starts out as a boudoir, pin-up girl sort of rose, along the lines of Frederic Malle’s Lipstick Rose. The raspberry is jammy-sweet (although there is nothing candied or child-like about it) and the iris lends a fair dusting of powder, and the whole thing is very creamy and uber-feminine. It would be out of the question (for me, that is) were it not for the coffee and pepper, which temper the sweetness (marginally, mind you) and lend some bite to what would otherwise probably be too prissy-girly for my taste…

Frederic Malle Une Rose fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2007 33 Comments

orange rose

Continuing with this week’s rose theme (see Lancome Mille et Une Roses and Bond no. 9 West Side & Bryant Park), today we have Une Rose (update: renamed Rose Tonnerre in 2022) from Frederic Malle Editions de Parfums, an entirely different sort of rose, far from the quiet elegance of the Lancome or the stylish modernity of the Bonds. Une Rose was created by Edouard Fléchier, a perfumer best known for Christian Dior Poison, and includes notes of geranium, blue camomile, wine dregs, Turkish rose absolute, and truffle accord (patchouly accord, vetiver and castoreum absolute)…

Bond no. 9 West Side & Bryant Park ~ fragrance reviews

Bond no. 9 Bryant Park fragrance

West Side and Bryant Park are the latest two fragrances from Bond no. 9, the perfume house that is mapping New York City’s neighborhoods in scent. Both were created by perfumer Michel Almairac of Robertet, and while neither is a soliflore, both feature prominent rose notes.

West Side launched last year, and was intended as an homage to the musical heritage of the West Side (you can see a picture of the bottle here). In addition to rose, the notes include ylang ylang, peony, sandalwood, amber, musk and vanilla.

Early reports that West Side had some affinity to Lancome Mille et Une Roses were intriguing…
