Romancing the Rose ~ out of the bottle

Amy Stewart’s wonderful book on the cut flower industry, Flower Confidential, begins with a conversation about scent:

“What’s the first thing a person does when you hand them flowers?” Bob Otsuka, general manager of the San Francisco Flower Mart, asked me. To answer his own question, he pantomimed the gesture people make, bringing his hands to his face and breathing deeply.

“They smell them,” he said. (p. 1)

But fragrance, as we know so well, is expensive. It costs plants a lot of energy to produce, and it shortens the lives of their blooms. Cut flowers, like those sold at the Flower Mart, are “bred for industry” — for color, uniformity, and durability. Along the way, most have lost their scent.

And yet, Otsuka tells Stewart, “People still want to believe that flowers smell good. I’ve seen somebody put their face right into a bunch of ‘Leonides’ and say, ‘Oh, they smell wonderful.’ But I know that rose. It’s got gold petals with coppery edges — you know the one I mean? It was bred for fall weddings. And it doesn’t have any fragrance at all.” (Ibid.)

Stewart goes on to see many floral marvels, but the story of those scentless roses haunts the rest of the book. It’s a small parable on the perils of turning the beauty and romance of flowers into a very big business, and a poignant reminder of the way we instinctively use our sense of smell to connect to the world. Later, Stewart catches herself sniffing at a bouquet even though she knows there is nothing to smell.

I’ve thought of those scentless roses often, and wistfully. So this May, when the large UK-based flower seller Interflora (a division of FTD) announced they would be showing four new fragrant rose bouquets at the Chelsea Flower Show I paid attention…

Bee, Black Bonni, and Buxom by Wiggle Perfume ~ fragrance review

Ah, the summer fling. I was never very good at short-term romances; I always got too attached. Still, late August seems like the right time to test out a few scented frivolities on a whim. I can love them and leave them, or if I feel a lasting chemistry, I can purchase a full-size bottle for fall. Wiggle Perfume has been one of my recent flirtations. I recently went through a set of samples from this indie perfumer based in Olympia, Washington, and several blends caught my fancy.

Bee (shown above) is “a honey-sweet outdoorsy blend” with additional notes of gardenia, neroli, cut grass, oakmoss, and woodsmoke. On the skin, it’s primarily a true-honey fragrance, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s been on the hunt for a honey-based scent. The creamy-woodsy accent of the other notes keeps Bee from straying too far into Pooh-Bear territory, so it ends up being a rich but not candy-like gourmand. It also has amazing endurance: it lasted through a nine-to-five day on my wrist…

Parfums DelRae Coup de Foudre ~ fragrance review

In its promotional description of Coup de Foudre, Parfums DelRae promises that “regardless of your previous ‘rose’ experience, it is ‘love at first sight.'” I’m always a little amused when new rose-inspired fragrances take this slightly defensive stance, as though we all carry negative preconceptions of rose perfumes and need to be reassured that this flower is actually very beautiful, sensual, and yes, “modern.” I wore my first rose fragrance when I was about eight years old — it was Avon’s Roses, Roses and it was memorably contained in a pig-shaped bottle — and I’ve never turned away from roses, so Coup de Foudre is preaching to the converted, in my case.

Coup de Foudre starts off as a just-picked rose and then turns gently romantic. Parfums DelRae mentions its use of true Rose de Mai from Grasse, in a composition that allows the raw material to shine through, and the natural rose note is definitely evident. It’s bright and clear, with hints of lemon and mint…

Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One ~ perfume review

Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One perfume

Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One, a flanker to the company’s 2006 release The One, definitely can’t be faulted for its promotion and packaging. It has a print advertising campaign and an accompanying television commercial created by the photographer-director Jean-Baptiste Mondino; the commercial also features a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. The fragrance’s muse, Scarlett Johansson, is shown looking delicately radiant in these ads, every inch a human meringue: her platinum hair tinted a soft strawberry blonde, her creamy skin set off by a rose-colored mesh gown (Dolce & Gabbana, of course), her lush figure reclining on a bed with a pink tufted-satin headboard. Rose The One’s bottle and the fragrance’s “juice” itself are also shaded pink, in case you missed the point. With visuals this tactile and boudoir-oriented, you might expect a powdery gourmand rose fragrance along the lines of Parfumerie Generale’s Brûlure de Rose.

Unfortunately, reality intrudes with the experience of the actual Eau de Parfum inside that blush-colored bottle and its layers of well-crafted marketing…

Bath & Body Works P.S. I Love You ~ fragrance review

P.S. I Love You is the latest fragrance release from Bath & Body Works, and it takes its place in the “Romantics” family of the company’s Signature Collection. It was developed by perfumer Dave Apel, who designed the fragrance as a “modern experience” of the rose. In this respect, Bath & Body Works is joining the trend that Stella started in 2003 (has it been that long?!). The company still seems to be hedging its bets, perhaps fearing that a rose perfume might be judged too old-fashioned by its target audience: roses don’t appear in the fragrance’s name or label, and in the website photos, the bottles are accompanied by flowers that could just as easily be peonies as roses. There’s a similar fear of commitment, so to speak, in the promotional text. Early press releases described P.S. I Love You as a scent of “timeless love” and “heartfelt love,” but the company website now calls it “Our flirtiest fragrance ever!”

Everyone has his or her own ideas about love, but I’d personally place this fragrance beyond the initial, giggly glow of a first date and into the more comfortable, intimate zone of an established romance…
