Jo Malone Rose Water & Vanilla ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 May 2013 42 Comments

Jo Malone Rose Water & Vanilla

I tried Jo Malone’s Rose Water & Vanilla when it was first released, but since I was under the impression that the “Cologne Intense Collection” (which included Rose Water & Vanilla) was a limited edition line, I didn’t bother to review it. Now that it seems to have become part of the permanent collection, I’ve revisited it and I’m still intrigued.

The Cologne Intense Collection is a group of “distinctive scents inspired by the rich, sensory experience of the Middle East,” and Rose Water & Vanilla is inspired by “delectable Turkish Delight”: “Rose Water and comforting vanilla are enriched with a succulent bite of rose loukoum. Tempting and addictive.” Elsewhere, Jo Malone describes this fragrance as “an elegant powdery scent that blends spicy sweet Orange Blossoms, the richness of Vanilla and an underlying smokiness from the agarwood.”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who looks back with fondness on the craze for loukhoum-inspired fragrances that swept through various perfume message boards in 2004…

Lostmarc’h Iroaz ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 19 April 2013 11 Comments

Dune roses

When I was recently compiling my list of Top 10 Spring Fragrances 2013 (a very subjective guide to what I’m wearing right now and will be wearing for next month or two), I realized that we’ve never posted a review of Lostmarc’h Iroaz; so, better late than never. Iroaz was released in 2008, and its name comes from the Breton word for “rose.” Lostmarc’h describes the fragrance as “a delicate yet wild marine rose. Rose absolute refreshed by marine aromas and red berries. The subtle and profound aroma of orris forges the link and harmonises the whole.”

Iroaz is one of those fragrances that appealed to me when I first heard about it, and I have no idea why I took four years or more to try it out and then purchase a bottle. Iroaz has never had the fan following of Lostmarc’h’s Lann Ael, which puzzles me, because it’s a well-crafted fragrance that should appeal to a range of tastes. When I sniff Iroaz from the bottle, I notice a lemony citrus note. But when I spray it on my skin, it’s an interesting blend of aquatic and peppery notes…

Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 28 February 2013 67 Comments

Giant Rose

She’s a rose with thorns, don’t mess with her. She’s a girl who goes to extremes. When she can, she soothes; and when she wants … !

Her fragrance lifts you higher, she rocks and shocks. — Serge Lutens1

La Fille de Berlin is the latest from Serge Lutens; reportedly it’s the only new scent we’ll get from the house this year (normally, there are two or three launches). It’s being introduced in conjunction with his new book of photography, Berlin à Paris, and pays homage, apparently, to the women of Soviet-occupied postwar Berlin.2

The first couple of seconds — it’s quick, don’t miss it! — are ROSE, big and bright enough to justify the all caps, and nearly a dead ringer for The Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose. But La Fille de Berlin soon enough goes off in another direction entirely, bypassing as well the dewy springtime rose of Lutens’ own Sa Majesté la Rose and the overtly seductive aura of Rose de Nuit…

Lush Flower’s Barrow, Couture La La by Juicy Couture, Isaac Mizrahi Fabulous ~ quick perfume reviews

Posted by Robin on 12 February 2013 16 Comments

Three quick reviews, no theme.

Gorilla Perfume at Lush Flower’s Barrow

Gorilla Perfume at Lush Flower's Barrow

Another of the latest crop of fragrances from Gorilla Perfume at Lush (see my recent review of Furze), Flower’s Barrow was inspired by an ancient hill fort in Dorset known as Flowers Barrow. Lush describes the scent as “sweet, odd and comforting”, and although Furze is closer to a conventional comfort scent, I’ll go for the sweet and odd. Flower’s Barrow is a dusky blackcurrant rose with heavy herbal undertones (notes include geranium, sage and thyme). I found the first sniff a bit too overwhelmingly post-modern hippie, and set it in the “no” pile, but then I kept taking it back out to try it again…

Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 11 January 2013 30 Comments

Atelier Cologne, mood board for Rose Anonyme

Perhaps a day will come when I tire of wearing (and writing about) rose perfumes, but that day has apparently not arrived yet. This week I’ve been sampling Rose Anonyme, a fairly recent release from niche fragrance house Atelier Cologne. Rose Anonyme is personified as “a breathtaking seductress caught in a stolen affair between light and dark,” in a narrative about a (female) jewel thief who leaves nothing behind except a rose and the scent of her perfume.

This fragrance was developed by perfumer Jérome Epinette and features top notes of bergamot, ginger and Turkish rose essence; heart notes of Turkish rose absolue, incense and velvet oud accord; and base notes of patchouli, papyrus and benzoin. Rose Anonyme is definitely rose-centered, but nothing else about it was quite what I expected. Not that it’s a shocking fragrance in any way: it’s actually quite pretty. It’s the most feminine Atelier fragrance yet…
