Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 18 October 2013 30 Comments

rose petals with dew

It’s no secret that I’m a rose-lover, as well as a longtime Lush shopper, so there was little chance that I’d be able to ignore Lush’s limited edition Rose Jam Shower Gel. Rose Jam’s fragrance is an “indulgent blend of rose, vanilla and lemon leaves,” the same blend that shows up in Lush’s Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner (cleverly named for Rowena, one of Lush’s product inventors) and Rose Jam Bubbleroon (a solid, dissolvable bubble-bath treat). The ingredients for Rose Jam in its shower gel format include real rose absolute, Egyptian geranium oil, Sicilian lemon oil and vanilla pod infusion.

I’ve sampled Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, but somehow never got around to purchasing a full tub — the “body conditioner” idea just doesn’t work for me, somehow. I’ve sniffed the Rose Jam Bubbleroon in stores, but never brought one home, because I don’t take baths all that often and anyway, the per-bath cost of Lush’s bubble bars is a bit prohibitive. On the other hand, I scooped up a medium-size bottle of Rose Jam Shower Gel and I’m trying to restrain myself from a return visit to Lush to grab more, more more…

Coqui Coqui Tabaco, Orange Blossom, Rosas Frescas, Rosas Secas & Coco-Coco ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 21 August 2013 11 Comments

Part of the Coqui Coqui Spa & Residence Resorts of the Yucatán (with hotels in Mérida, Tulum, Valladolid, Cobá), the Coqui Coqui Perfumería produces perfumes, massage and bath oils, bath salts, hand soap, shampoo/conditioner, body cream, linen spray, diffuser oils, candles…and mosquito repellant! The Coqui Coqui line of fragrances was inspired by the horticultural work of the Franciscan monks who came to Mexico following the Spanish conquest. These monks, guided by Mayan experts, used the fragrant plants of southern Mexico to create medicines and scented products for domestic use and export to Spain.

Coqui Coqui’s Eaux de Cologne and Eaux de Parfum are “simple;” the fragrances are streamlined (without being boring), and I imagine they would hit the spot in hot and steamy climates (like in Yucatán, where they are used to fragrance Coqui Coqui hotels). Today, I’m reviewing my favorite fragrances in the extensive perfume line-up…

A Dozen Roses Angel Face ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 21 June 2013 12 Comments

A Dozen Roses Angel Face, front viewA Dozen Roses Angel Face, back view

June is the month of roses, and somehow I — a devoted rose-lover! — haven’t posted a single review of a rose perfume over the past few weeks. This review will both fill and not-quite-fill that requirement at the same time, since it covers a rose-themed fragrance that doesn’t smell particularly, well, rose-y.

Angel Face is the sixth fragrance in the Dozen Roses collection. It’s described as “a divine inspiration: enchanting, enticing, desired,” and its composition includes notes of black currant, apple, peony, violet, jasmine, lilac, patchouli, roasted tonka, vetiver and rose absolute. It is named for the Angel Face rose, a floribunda rose with ruffled, mauve-lavender petals and a fruity scent. (And it’s not to be confused with Ava-Luxe‘s Angel Face, a powdery white musk.)

I haven’t ever smelled an Angel Face rose (please comment, if you have!), but this is definitely a fruity-floral fragrance with a gourmand edge rather than a straight-up floral…

Lancome Miracle and Estee Lauder Intuition ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 20 May 2013 94 Comments

La Reine Victoria rose

My garden is crazy with roses these days. They splash pink and mauve near the street and waft fruity, peppery fragrance to my neighbors’ porches. I’m greedy with them, and four vases of Madame Isaac Pereire, La Reine Victoria, and Jude the Obscure in varying stages of decrepitude crowd the dining room table (I love their perfume best just as they start to shrivel), and another few vases are crammed on the mantle.

But other than on the stem, the scent of roses doesn’t move me. Sure, I love the occasional spritz of Guerlain Nahéma when I’m feeling over the top, and a dose of Parfum d’Empire Eau Suave is marvelously fresh on a warm day, but otherwise rose can feel institutional and even dowdy. But now, when my garden is flush with roses, it seems right to revisit two often overlooked rose-centered fragrances: Lancôme Miracle and Estée Lauder Intuition…
