Scented advent calendars 2018, part 2

Posted by Robin on 19 October 2018 7 Comments

More scent-related advent calendars for 2018 — see part 1 if you missed it. And don’t forget, most advent calendars sell out early! If you know of any I missed, do comment.

Diptyque’s 2018 Advent is out: “25 little pleasures to discover before Christmas. The advent calendar brings together holiday treasures in a magical box. Emblematic products of the House in discovery formats make everyday a celebration; contains candles, fragrance & body care products.” (Includes fifteen 35g candles, one 70g candle, seven 10 ml fragrances, two 15 ml body products.) $425 at Diptyque…

The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 21 August 2018 4 Comments

The new Ritual of Holi collection from Rituals is apparently geared at teens, so it must be my inner teen that is after the Shower Flower shower foam that comes out of the canister in the shape of a flower. “Whip up a great time under the shower. The fun starts as soon as you squeeze the bottle, revealing foam in the form of a blooming flower. … Soothing Flamingo Flower and sparkling Pink Grapefruit blend together to throw a fresh and radiant party for your skin. Lovely White Lily and delicious Peach Flower mingle together to create a candy-like fragrance that leaves a sweetness on your skin.” 200 ml for €7.50 at Sephora in France…

Scented advent calendars 2017, part 1

Posted by Robin on 13 October 2017 9 Comments

With the usual apologies for holiday creep, I’m starting our yearly roundup of advent calendars now, since they tend to launch early and then sell out quickly. If you want one, buy it soon. Part 2 will be coming up later this month. (Please note that some of these calendars are not available in the US. Advent calendars are more popular in the UK than in the US).

Diptyque’s 2017 Advent is out at Selfridges: “Make this year’s countdown to Christmas the most special yet with the anticipated Advent Calendar from Diptyque. Housing 25 little treasures to discover before the big day, it brings together the label’s beloved products in a unique discovery format. Look forward to a selection of cute miniatures including 10ml Vinaigre de Toilette, deluxe 15ml skin and body care, mini-candles in 35g format and a 70g candle make every day a celebration.” £300. (Most years, this ends up in the US as well but sells out fast…)

Rituals Foaming Shower Gel Sensation

Rituals is a Dutch bath-and-body company founded in 2000, but since it only began selling its products in the United States about six months ago — first at Barneys, then in a Rituals storefront in New York’s SoHo neighborhood — I didn’t have the chance to try them until this winter. The Rituals product line is extensive, so I started with one of its best-selling products: Foaming Shower Gel Sensation, a new twist on an everyday shower item, available in six scents.

Whereas most shower-friendly body cleansers are thick liquids sold in bottles with flip-tops or pump dispensers, Rituals’ shower gel is packaged in a metal canister like a shaving product. It acts like a shaving product, too, turning from a stream of translucent gel into a fluffy, foamy lather when it hits a damp washcloth or a mesh puff. (I prefer the latter for all my shower needs.) I’m not sure what the benefit of this foaming technology is; maybe it’s just a gimmick? As a body product, this gel-foam is effective and seems gentle on the skin, but I wouldn’t be recommending it if I didn’t enjoy the fragrances, too…
