In perfume-loving circles we talk about how scent can evoke powerful emotion and how it seeps into areas of the brain that language is too clumsy to enter. We know that perfume can wake up memories that might have otherwise slept for good. Well, listen up, friends: if you had a rough time of it in the mid-1970s, take my advice and stay far away from Revlon Charlie.

Charlie came out in 1973 and was marketed toward the young, single, pants-wearing, tequila-sunrise-drinking working woman. While Charlie was under construction, its working name was “Cosmo”, after the sort of woman who read Cosmopolitan magazine. According to Osmoz, Charlie’s top notes are citrus oils, peach, hyacinth, and tarragon; its heart notes are jasmine, lily of the valley, cyclamen, and carnation; and its base is cedarwood, sandalwood, oakmoss, and vanilla. Osmoz describes Charlie as a floral oriental, but I’ve also seen it referred to as a green floral, or even as a green chypre…

Revlon delays release of Flair fragrance

Revlon has announced they will delay the release of their upcoming Flair fragrance until some time in 2007 so as to "focus its efforts on its current products". The announcement follows Friday's news that Revlon's cosmetic sales have been lower than originally forecasted. Read more at washingtonpost (link no longer working, sorry!) or newyorktimes.

The Different Company Sel de Vetiver fragranceThe Different Company has launched its sixth perfume, Sel de Vetiver.

It is the second entry in the line from perfumer Celine Ellena, and includes notes of grapefruit, cardamom, Bourbon geranium, lovage, Haitian vetiver, patchouli, iris and ylang ylang. Inspirations for the fragrance are said to include the scent of salt drying on the skin after bathing in the sea…

Guerlain L'Instant d'un Ete fragranceGuerlain has launched L'Instant d'un Eté, a limited edition summer version of L'Instant. The notes include grapefruit, bitter orange, magnolia, jasmine, ylang ylang, vanilla, benzoin and musk. (via absolufeminin) As previously reported, the men's version, L’Instant d’un Été for men has “cool, frosted notes teamed with woods”.
