Fire, Twigs & Smoke ~ home fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 21 April 2015 32 Comments

home fragrance items

I live in a house that’s almost 100 years old; with me are two male cats (and their three litter boxes — yes, they have more “bathrooms” than I do) and my partner (who cooks all the time — seafood, Indian, Thai, Burmese, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Italian food — pungent stuff!) Apart from doing a “country-house-style” cleaning a few times a year (scrubbing walls, floors, ceilings and everything in between) I rely on scented products to make my environment smell a little better than it would if I simply relied on open windows and elbow grease. I’m a big user/addict of, pardon the cuteness, candles (fire), diffusers (twigs) and incense (smoke).

Like all scented products, home fragrance prices have skyrocketed; this post will concentrate on “affordable” (or at least reasonably priced) items. Please chime in with your own favorites in all categories. The comments from my recent soap post provided sensational ideas for soap fiends; I hope this article will generate the same response for home fragrances fanatics…

More shopping ideas: check out Perfume Posse’s recommendations for indie fragrance gifts.

2013 Diptyque holiday candles

To repeat what I said last year, maybe some year, Diptyque’s holiday candles will look so dull that we’ll leave them out, but that year has (still) not yet arrived. This year’s limited editions include Pine Bark (“A clean, woody, smoky fragrance that combines pine and cedar with hinoki, the Japanese cypress.”), Orange Chai (“A mellow but not sweet accord of orange, quince and a mixture of Indian spices.”) and Indian Incense (“A mysterious, deep fragrance, dark and floral. Rose and carnation are balanced with incense and myrrh.”), with designs by Tsé & Tsé. $68 each (190g), or $32 for a mini candle (70g), at Diptyque….

Diptyque holiday candles 2011

The 2011 holiday collection from Diptyque: Epinette in green (“Echoing the aromatic freshness of its needles and the resinuous notes of its pine cones, the Spruce Tree candle promises a wintry runaway in the depths of the wood.”; in 3 sizes $32-$275) or Perdigone in red (“Concentrate of warm and fruity notes around a spiced plum that deliciously perfumes the house. Absolutely comforting in the depths of winter.”; in 2 sizes $32-68)…

Saint Parfum Room Diffuser in Fresh Cut Bouquet ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Pia on 18 October 2009 8 Comments

Saint Parfum reed diffuser

It’s early evening mid-October, and I meander up the bustling streets of the upper East side in Manhattan, making my way home after a long day. I pass by one of my favorite florists, and decide to step inside, desirous of the luxurious sights and scents of colorful bouquets of roses, tulips, and lilies held inside the little shop like so many treasures, now that the weather has turned cool.

As I step inside, I can smell that a large fresh bouquet has just gone out. The pleasantly humid air holds the watery green scent of cut tulip stalks, some of which are still lying scattered about on the white marble counter tops where they put the bouquet together. There are the usual displays of orchids and cyclamen, dark green ivy and even some early paperwhites, but a distinctly floral note lingers in the air. I imagine the bouquet might have held some freesia, a few hyacinths, and perhaps even some lily of the valley. I am reminded of magnolias and peonies; a waft of late springtime in the midst of October. I wish I had stepped in a moment earlier in time to see the flowers.

This is the scent of Saint Parfum’s Fresh Cut Bouquet room diffuser…
