Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 19 February 2014 30 Comments

Atelier Cologne Cédrat Enivrant

I’ve fallen behind in my sampling of the Atelier Cologne line. I tried all the original releases (and I liked Trèfle Pur enough to put it on my to-buy list — where it’s languished for years). Just-launched Cédrat Enivrant* is the first brand-new Atelier Cologne fragrance I’ve tried since Vanille Insensée three years ago.

The Atelier colognes I’ve worn remind me of Jo Malone perfumes: well-blended, non-threatening, mostly “dressy-casual” in style. These type scents smell “good” but rarely inspire me to purchase them. Cédrat Enivrant fits in this category.

Cédrat Enivrant (“intoxicating citron”) goes on smelling sharp, robust and natural…

Greg Lauren for Barneys New York ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 11 October 2013 25 Comments

Barneys + Greg Lauren fragrance

Barneys New York has just launched its second fragrance collaboration with a designer; the first in the line was L’Wren Scott for Barneys New York, and now we have a new scent bearing the name of Greg Lauren. Like L’Wren Scott, Greg Lauren for Barneys New York was developed by perfumer Ralf Schwieger. Its composition includes tonka beans, vanilla, and marine notes that evoke “irresistible sensual emotions.” Each bottle is “hand-embellished” by Greg Lauren.

As I sit here with a spritz or two of Greg Lauren on my wrist, with a carded perfume vial and a copy of the Barneys catalogue sitting next to my laptop, I’m left wondering again how much the “image” of a fragrance should factor into a review. In this case, I don’t think we can avoid it: while not exactly a celebrity fragrance, Greg Lauren for Barneys New York is inextricably tied to its namesake’s identity: Lauren is a former actor, an artist-turned-designer, the husband of actress Elizabeth Berkeley (yes, she of Showgirls fame), and a nephew of Ralph Lauren, one of the most famous of all American designers with his own fragrance brand…

Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena ~ fragrance review and a quick poll

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2013 134 Comments

irisiris

West Village niche perfume boutique Aedes de Venustas has launched their second fragrance, Iris Nazarena, or their third, if you count the earlier Aedes scent for L’Artisan Parfumeur. Iris Nazarena follows last year’s Aedes de Venustas Signature, and I think we can now safely say a few things about the Aedes aesthetic: they like assertive perfumes — hey, meek and wearable are already adequately covered elsewhere, right? — and they like incense, and they seem to know what they’re doing when it comes to perfume development.

Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour did the Aedes Signature and the L’Artisan, but for the Iris Nazarena, they’ve gone with Ralf Schwieger, and I’ll repeat some of the press release…
