Perfume on the radio: gourmet perfume dinners

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2007 4 Comments

Perfume Dinner Is a Feast for the Nose, on this morning's NPR Morning Edition, reports on an event at the Carlyle Hotel in which Chandler Burr hosts a "gourmet dinner designed to show how perfume can enhance food and drink". Perfumes featured include Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. Thanks to Jessica for the link!

Update: read more about the dinner at Food & Wine, or see the swag you get for attending (the dinner costs $200) at New York Insider (link no longer active, sorry!). Upcoming dinners are planned for Dallas and Santa Fe, find out more at rosewoodhotels.

The Osmotheque on NPR

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2006 2 Comments

Ever wondered what Napoleon smelled like? Or what perfume the Romans wore to dinner?

The answers lie at The Osmotheque — a fragrance conservatory in Versailles, France that collects, catalogues and recreates perfumes of the past.

Many of the 1,700 fragrances are reproduced from the original formulas.

Correspondent Susan Stone of NPR goes to the Osmotheque and talks to its founder, Jean Kerléo…

A few perfume tidbits…

Perfume bottles

Am just back from a very quick last hurrah at the beach before school starts and summer officially ends. I didn’t bring any perfume, just my new Hermès Jardin Sur Le Nil body lotion, which is high on my list of best finds of 2006.

Laurice Rahme & Maurice Roucel on the radio

Posted by Robin on 8 March 2006 15 Comments

Listen to Laurice Rahme of Bond no. 9 and perfumer Maurice Roucel talking about "The Smell of Success" on WNYC radio. Scroll down to the third segment; it is about 26 minutes long. Much of the discussion centers on the Bond line of fragrances, but there are also some interesting tidbits about more general perfume-related matters. Many thanks to the anonymous person who sent me the link!

Perfume on the radio: Nose School, Chandler Burr & Jean Paul Guerlain

Posted by Robin on 17 March 2005 2 Comments

Thank you to steelyglint from the Basenotes forum for finding this link to a 30 minute documentary on the perfume school in Versailles. You will need to click on the link (link expired, sorry!) under "Nose School". I haven't had time to listen to it yet, let me know if you enjoy it!

And while searching around the web last weekend for information on Demeter, I came across a link to this radio show on fragrance which was aired last year on Studio 360. Chandler Burr joins the regular show and among other things, they discuss the Demeter line and the use of smell in Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. I listened to it shortly after it aired, but it was worth a repeat.

An older, shorter, but still interesting radio interview: this 2002 piece from National Public Radio in which Susan Stamberg talks to Jean-Paul Guerlain about his retirement from the company that had been run by his family for five generations.
