Ambient scent marketing

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2010 11 Comments

Scenting an entire building is the latest ambition in a growing business that has, for years, gone unnoticed by most consumers. Roger Bensinger, executive vice-president for scent marketing company Prolitec, estimates there are now 20 companies worldwide specializing in ambient scent-marketing and dispersion technology. While many of these companies are privately held, industry executives value the business at roughly between $80 million and $100 million.

Wafting black pepper and charcoal smells

Posted by Robin on 4 June 2010 8 Comments

There's something in the air along a busy local road, and for once, it's not just exhaust fumes: It's the smell of grilled steak, courtesy of what appears to be the nation's first-ever scented highway billboard.

The Bloom grocery chain, part of Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion, is aiming to catch shoppers by the nose by wafting black pepper and charcoal smells from the base of a sign along River Highway (N.C. 150) in Mooresville.

I got headaches just from smelling it all the time

Teens Turning Green first targeted Abercrombie & Fitch last spring, when the group sold environmentally friendly products at a temporary storefront at the Village at Corte Madera shopping center. Organizers said they noticed a strong smell wafting from the nearby Abercrombie & Fitch store.

"I got headaches just from smelling it all the time," said Kate Smith, 18, student co-president of Teens Turning Green and a senior at San Domenico School in San Anselmo.

— The Teens Turning Green advocacy group asks Abercrombie & Fitch to turn off the perfume dispensers. Read the whole story at Marin teen group pressures Abercrombie & Fitch on store perfume at the Marin Independent Journal.

Subtle undercurrents of perilla leaf, woods and herbs

Posted by Robin on 1 April 2010 2 Comments

Holiday Inn is updating everything from its lobbies to its logo (formerly written out in cursive, it has been edited down to a cleaner, modern “H”). It even has created a piped-in signature scent that isn’t a byproduct of a highly chlorinated pool. The smell: citrus and white tea, with subtle undercurrents of perilla leaf, woods and herbs.

— From Motels Boost the Thread Count at the New York Times, with many thanks to Fleur for the link! Apparently they have a separate scent for the Holiday Inn Express hotels — with sweet grass and green tea.
