Is that a whiff of beer hops? You’re in Ebisu. Warm crepes? That’ll be Harajuku. Smell an ocean breeze? Hamamatsu-cho awaits.

If all goes according to plan, all 30 stations on the Yamanote, Tokyo’s central loop line, will have unique “scent alerts” functioning much like the current platform melodies.

Perfumes inspired by experimental electronic music

Unsound music festival has commissioned perfumes inspired by experimental electronic music. The German perfumer Geza Schoen will create three fragrances based on compositions by Montreal sound artist and musician Tim Hecker, London-based Kode9 and Australian-born, Iceland-based composer Ben Frost.

A syrupy sweet perfume

Of all the things that stood out at Prabal Gurung’s show last year - the clear plastic curtain, the satiny pencil skirts, the mannequinlike models - fashion editors still recall the one thing they could not see: the smell. The runway show, which took place at the Skylight at Moynihan Station, was scented with a syrupy sweet perfume, which had some in the front row holding their noses.

A scent meant to evoke a seaside vacation

The changing rooms look like cabanas, beach sounds waft from the speaker system, and the imaging machine is disguised as a giant sand castle. The piece de resistance? The place is perfumed with Ocean Breeze, a scent meant to evoke a seaside vacation.
