Fluffy and light

Posted by Robin on 7 December 2018 3 Comments

It’s sugar and cream, whipped and fluffy. It smells like whipped sugar in the air. … It’s not artificial and sugary and sickening. It smells fluffy and light.

— Dawn Goldworm of scent marketing company 12.29, on the scent that will greet the audience as they arrive for The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Read more at Christmas whiff: A custom 'Nutcracker’ scent will infuse the Academy of Music lobby at The Inquirer.

Aromatic fried garlic-like scent

The scent diffuser will dispense aromatic fried garlic-like scent to mirror the stir-fry flavour of popular local dishes.

Samples are slotted into capsules which are dispensed from the machine through a smart technology activation via EZ-LINK and CPAS card. By tapping the card, consumers can collect and walk away with the free “Knorr Hao Chi” capsule samples. Each capsule comes with a dedicated one-dish recipe that educates consumers on the product usage and more recipes are available by scanning the QR code on the machine.

Feel the sourness

It’s not the cozy scent of a soul-warming hearth, Mr. Kurkdjian said, but a cold, marble fireplace after the flame has been extinguished. The soot and ash left behind is meant to help the audience “feel the sourness” of a conversation between a son and his father, whose sins this son disclosed to the entire family.

— Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian scents a movie. Read more at What’s That Smell? It’s ‘Festen,’ a Play and Film With Aroma at the New York Times.

A whiff of something weird

Posted by Robin on 7 October 2017 6 Comments

Students at a Baltimore high school had gotten a whiff of something weird.

During class Thursday afternoon, students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School started to smell a “strange odor.”

Some of them began to cough and have trouble breathing, so students and staff members were evacuated from the building, and the fire department was called to investigate the cause.

— The Washington Post gives the answer away in the article title: A school was evacuated over a ‘strange odor.’ It was pumpkin spice air freshener.

Try Street Perfume

Posted by Robin on 29 July 2017 4 Comments

Commuters waiting for their ride are presented with a chrome cylinder, the inside glowing blue, labeled “Try Street Perfume.” If they’re bold enough to stick their mitts into the mystery orifice, they’re rewarded with a spritz of hyperlocal fragrance—this week’s is “Economic Development”; “Hollywood Springtime” is next week’s offering.

[Alan] Nakagawa is the very first ”Creative Catalyst Artist-in-Residence” at the L.A. Department of Transportation, a year-long gig that involves working with the agency’s Vision Zero team to reimagine how people perceive streets.
