They didn’t want anyone to feel assaulted

Apparently the smells made the museum very nervous! They didn’t want anyone to feel assaulted by having to endure the scent of human hair from a hat, and so on. Personally, I very much enjoyed the pat-’n-sniff wall in the “Specter of the Rose” gallery, which allows a visitor to release the smells that have been lifted from a Paul Poiret dress and pair of House of Drecoll gowns and embedded in the paint.

To reawaken these clothes through smell, the team from Sissel Tolaas Studio extracted scent molecules from the fabrics, then used a microfilter to trap the air and moisture. Eventually, they analyzed the molecules to identify and replicate the smells. Some of the smells you’ll find include odors found in tobacco, bitter drinks, high-end skin products, roses, polluted environments, and toothpaste. The technology is so advanced, that it even determined aromas associated with human hair and human skin that had been in contact with a dog.

The smell of the snack

Amsterdam-based agency TBWA\Neboko collaborated with Raúl&Rigel, a production company specializing in fabricating unusual billboards, to produce a series of unbranded, blank red and yellow billboards with a hidden compartment to store fries. An internal heat and ventilation system intensified the smell of the snack and directed it toward anyone walking within five meters of the display.

Pomegranate, pine, cloves, cinnamon and mandarin orange

One-hundred-and-fifty lighted Christmas trees — a mix of fraser and noble fir — will line the avenue’s sidewalks from 46th through 61st Streets, with mist scent diffusers from Scent Marketing Inc. dispersed across every few tree clusters to distribute the fragrance, which features notes of pomegranate, pine, cloves, cinnamon and mandarin orange.

“Both of my grandmothers were chefs so I grew up in the kitchens and smelling the fields of flowers around our house,” she said from her home in Paris. Ms. [Dora] Baghriche, a senior perfumer at the fragrance development company Firmenich, has since created scents for major fashion houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Estée Lauder.

But one of the most unusual challenges of her career came when an unexpected brand asked her to design a fragrance for new spaces they were building called “experience centers.”

The brand was Mastercard, befuddling Ms. Baghriche, 43. “When Mastercard told me what they wanted to do, my first question was, ‘Why?’” she said.
