Jackpot

He described the old days when you had slot machines - which we still have in Australia. Pull the lever down and wait to see if the five cherries would line up, hoping cash would fly out. Jackpot.

The juice, the perfume, in his mind is the first win, cherry #1. Cherry #2 is the bottle. To him, it is the visual interpretation of the fragrance promise. Cherry #3 is the name of the perfume. So often, he says, in today’s crowded perfume world, the names mean nothing. They’re borrowed. Madame this. Monsieur that. They are not promises. Opium, Eternity, Angel, they offer a promise. The fourth cherry is the fragrance story, so often pretentious, overblown, sometimes silly. That authentic feeling we can share is missing.

Very little creativity left

The designer, however, believes there has been a gradual decline in the creativity in bottle design. “There is very little creativity left. People are copying designs,” the timbre of his voice conveying disappointment.

Absolutely unique

A lovely 4+ minute film on the amazing bottle designer Pierre Dinand. Do find time to give it a watch if you can. You can find out more about Dinand (including a complete list of his bottle designs) at his website.

A retrospective featuring 30 of Dinand's favorite bottle designs will run from 30 March through 4 April at Liberty London's Alternative Fragrance Festival, where Dinand will also be talking with Jan Ahlgren of Vilhelm Parfumerie at 11 am on 1 April.

Pierre Dinand is a living legend in the world of perfume packaging and design. His bottle creations are too numerous to list, but here are just a few examples: Givenchy Ysatis, Ivoire de Balmain, Tiffany, Coriandre, Caron Nocturnes, Lancome Magie Noire, and Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche. Those of you who drooled over the recent special edition bottle of Mûre et Musc for L’Artisan — that is his design. So was the lovely green fig bottle for Premier Figuier that was released last year.
