Paris and perfume

Posted by Angela on 9 March 2009 86 Comments

A search on Basenotes for fragrances with “Paris” in the title turns up 37 names. Sure, a few are Paris Hilton scents, but the rest are plays on the city itself: Yves Saint Laurent Paris, of course; but also Bourjois Evening in Paris and Springtime in Paris; Holzman & Stephanie La Parisienne, its male counterpart, Molinard Le Parisian, and the baby-faced Téo Cabanel Demoiselle de Paris; a couple of discontinued Guerlains, Paris-Gem and Chypre de Paris; the nearly forgotten, double-hitter Caron London Paris; and more.

Why is the idea of Paris so attractive to perfume companies? (Or to musicians, novelists, and filmmakers, for that matter?) Paris has more romance than, say, Sacramento, but the reality is that it's a big city with bad traffic, dirty air, poverty, racism, a high cost of living, and dog poop on the sidewalks. It's a myth that every corner café serves up homemade cassoulet and house wine from the owner's cousin's vineyard in Burgundy. You're more likely to end up with a pre-frozen pizza or an industrially fabricated croque monsieur. And not every Parisian woman is chic — or thin. I'm not saying that Paris should be a theme park with men in berets, but the amount of loud pink and green wallpaper in many a downscale Parisian hotel is alarming.

I say this, and yet I can't stay away…

Colette ~ shopping for perfume in Paris

Colette boutique in ParisColette boutique in Paris

Colette, the über-trendy fashion store in central Paris, is actually quite easy to walk right past. It’s a modern shop on the corner of rue St. Honoré, with a small and modest sign on the wall outside. Only the presence of a bouncer at the door (I’m not sure he’d count as a doorman), alerts you to the fact that there’s something a bit different here.

Inside, it’s packed with customers, and even it wasn’t it would still look busy; mannequins (of the plastic kind) people the shop floor at random. The ground floor is devoted to fashion, and Colette intends for you to be positively immersed in that fashion.

Downstairs, there’s a café, which must be excellent, as a dense queue was curling up the stairs to the ground floor at the time of my visit.

However, perfumistas should head upstairs, where there’s yet more fashion, and the perfume department…

Esteban ~ shopping for perfume in Paris

Posted by Guest Shopper on 23 November 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Esteban is one of those strange, elusive lines. You hear about new releases but rarely manage to lay your hands on them. Vendors carry a couple of their scents or bathroom products, but never the latest or the one you’re interested in.

It’s therefore a bit of a shock to come across this beautiful double-fronted store in the heart of the Marais. In a quiet but elegant street, the Esteban shop is filled to the ceiling with products and lines you never even knew existed. It’s exquisitely presented in a bright, clean style, and the products themselves are so delightfully packaged, it’s all you can do to leave the shop without your credit card needing a seat and a glass of water…

Stephanie de Saint-Aignan ~ shopping for perfume in Paris

Posted by Guest Shopper on 23 November 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Stephanie de Saint-Aignan with customer

The Marais district — essentially the 3rd arrondissement — is a quiet area that’s becoming increasingly trendy and popular with designers. The Stéphanie de Saint-Aignan boutique is in a quiet cobbled residential street with cute shops at ground level and apartments above.

The shop is bright and uncluttered, in a modern style, with the perfumes arranged around the walls on white cupboards. There’s a dinky spiral staircase leading to an upstairs stockroom…

The Different Company ~ shopping for perfume in Paris

Posted by Guest Shopper on 16 November 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

The Different Company, Paris, interior

The Different Company shop in Paris is in the Jewish quarter of the Marais district, on the same quiet road as the Miller et Bertaux boutique.

The shop sells the full range of The Different Company products — bottles, leather cases, etc. — but also carries other ranges that match the The Different Company aesthetic of beautiful presentation and packaging. At the time of my visit, the ‘guest’ line was Maison Calavas, which offers cosmetics in gorgeous palettes, many of them leather-clad in a similar way to the The Different Company’s leather containers…
