Top 10 Summer Fragrances 2012

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2012 108 Comments

I am a summer person. My favorite thing about spring is that it’s almost summer, and my favorite thing about fall is that sometimes, the summer days linger on longer than expected. I have nothing good at all to say about winter. But we take turns writing the seasonal Top 10 posts for Now Smell This, and somehow it has worked out that I’ve only done the summer list twice, in 2005 and 2007. Either one of those lists1 would take me happily through a summer even now, all these years later, and truth be told, summer is when I wear the least perfume anyway.2 Many days, a light layer of scented lotion is enough fragrance for me, and there are many more days when (horrors!) I wear no fragrance at all.

For this year’s list, I’ve avoided repeats by emphasizing post-2007 fragrances. Most, but not all, of my choices are unisex, and I’ve included niche and mainstream and indie, cheap and not so cheap…

Parfums de Nicolai L’Eau a la Folie & Ayala Moriel Etrog ~ fragrance reviews

Today, as I pack for my first summer vacation, quick reviews of two fragrances perfect for summer wear, on vacation or otherwise.

Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau à la Folie

We’ve had debates here before about fruity florals — a segment of the perfumista community frowns on fruity florals simply because they’re so ubiquitous, and let’s face it, many (maybe even most) of them are pretty dull. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: some of my best friends are fruity florals. French niche house Parfums de Nicolaï made one of my favorites, the sadly discontinued sparkling mango summer-cocktail Eau Exotique. The brand’s latest, L’Eau à la Folie, is a citrus fruity floral that I’d likewise describe as a sparkling summer-cocktail, this time with peach, juniper berry, pink pepper, mint, lime, jasmine and rum…

Parfums de Nicolai Maharanih ~ fragrance review

This review of Parfums de Nicolaï Maharanih was supposed to start like this: Some fragrances are the life of the party. They’re attractive, engaging, and you can’t help but gravitate toward them, even if they’re not the sort of people you choose to have in your life all the time.

Then, surveying other reviews, I discovered that many people don’t see Maharanih as a charming diva at all, but as a grating boor. So I’ve changed the angle on this review. Let me start again:

Parfums de Nicolaï Maharanih is like Cher bedecked in Bob Mackie finery. Whether you admire her beauty and audacity, or think she looks like a Trojan drag queen at a disco, you’re sure to have an opinion…
