L’Occitane Ruban d’Orange ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2006 37 Comments

L'Occitane Ruban d'OrangeL'Occitane Ruban d'Orange

Ruban d’Orange is the latest fragrance from the L’Occitane en Provence chain, which is becoming very nearly as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Ruban d’Orange is being advertised with the tag line “bring sunshine to winter”, and has notes of Calabrian lemon, mandarin and sweet orange of Sicily, bitter orange of Seville, green fig, vetiver, tonka bean and cedar.

I am a citrus-lover, and have found two holy grail fragrances in this category already: Carthusia Mediterraneo for lemon, Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match for grapefruit. Lime and orange are still up for grabs, and orange seems particulary hard to do right, or at least to do right in a way that keeps your attention for more than 15 minutes…

Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte & Concentre d’Orange Verte: fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 25 July 2006 12 Comments

Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte

Hermès introduced Eau d’Orange Verte in 1979 (the original name was Eau de Cologne d’Hermès; it was renamed Eau d’Orange Verte in 1997). It was created by perfumer Francoise Caron and has notes of bergamot, lemon, mandarin, mint, jasmine, orange blossom, patchouli, moss and cedar.

Eau d’Orange Verte is a citrus chypre, along the lines of Ô de Lancôme or Eau de Rochas. It starts with a slap of citrus, very sharp and acidic. The sharpness fades into a very dry orange under a heavy veil of herbal green and what smells to me like petitgrain. There is a whisper of dry florals, and a lovely mossy woods base.

It is currently marketed as a unisex fragrance, but I believe it was originally introduced as a men’s. When I first tried it several years ago, I thought it too masculine to wear…

Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Sanguine Muskissime ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 13 June 2006 14 Comments

Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Sanguine Muskissime

Sanguine Muskissime was one of Maître Parfumeur et Gantier’s original fragrance offerings when the line was established in 1988. It is composed of bergamot, mandarin, peach, blood orange, grapefruit, lemon, jasmine, musk and sandalwood.

I first tried Sanguine Muskissime several years ago, and was not overly fond of it. A sample recently came my way again and I thought I would give it another go. For a few minutes, I thought it might work for me this time…

L’Artisan Mandarine Tout Simplement fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 4 May 2006 26 Comments

L'Artisan Mandarine Tout Simplement fragranceL'Artisan Mandarine Tout Simplement fragrance

Mandarine Tout Simplement is this year’s limited edition summer fragrance from L’Artisan Parfumeur, following last year’s Extrait de Songe and 2004’s Ananas Fizz. It was created by perfumer Olivia Giacobetti and the notes are green mandarin, ginger, yellow mandarin, frangipani, red mandarin, and white cedar.

The top notes are just a joy: tart mandarin with lots of peel and a little fizz of ginger underneath, very juicy and summery and bright. Like the most glorious summer day in early June, regrettably, it cannot last, and so goes Mandarine; it fades rapidly into a sheer, blended floral over cedar, pretty, but not nearly so compelling as what came before…

Guerlain Orange Magnifica & Pivoine Magnifica: two new Aqua Allegorias

Posted by Robin on 16 June 2005 46 Comments

Guerlain Orange Magnifica & Pivoine Magnifica

Guerlain launched the Aqua Allegoria line in 1999 with 5 fragrances: Herba Fresca, Pamplelune, Rosa Magnifica, Lavande Velours and Ylang & Vanille. There are currently 9 in the range, although 3, Anisia Bella, Mentafollia, and Foliflora, are slated to be discontinued.

The fragrances are meant to “showcase nature”, and they tend to be lighter and less complicated than the regular line. They are also cheaper. Today I am trying the latest releases: Orange Magnifica and Pivoine Magnifica…
