A tiny tweak

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2021 Leave a Comment

Scientists cannot yet predict a chemical’s smell simply from its molecular shape, explains lead author Dietmar Krautwurst, a molecular cell biologist at the Technical University of Munich. For example, the chemical responsible for caramel scent, called furaneol, has also been described as smelling like strawberries or cotton candy. But just a tiny tweak in the chemical structure makes it recognizable by a different receptor, giving it a savory and herby scent instead, Krautwurst says.

Smell as a legitimate wedge that one might use to understand the brain

Before COVID, Datta says, “It was hard to get many people—some scientists included—to pay attention to smell as a legitimate wedge that one might use to understand the brain. And I think that’s really changed now.” For researchers like him and [Venkatesh] Murthy, the fresh urgency directed at their field is an unfamiliar feeling, but a galvanizing one. “I’m excited to begin to think more about the underlying problem of smell itself,” Datta says. Murthy foresees a renaissance in olfaction research. Lately he’s been contemplating how breathing and smelling might intertwine neurologically.

Cats don’t accept scent alone

Posted by Robin on 16 September 2021 3 Comments

Most pet cats form strong bonds with their caretakers and appear to find their presence reassuring. However, unlike human babies, cats don’t accept scent alone as a worthy stand-in for the people they have bonded with, says Kristyn Vitale at Unity College in Maine.

“Olfaction is an important sense for cats, and it’s related to their social behaviour, but in our study, [owner-scented objects] did not have a stress-reducing effect,” she says. “The smell might even make matters worse for some cats.”

Hummingbirds using their sense of smell

“This is pretty exciting, as it is the first clear demonstration of hummingbirds using their sense of smell alone to make foraging decisions and avoid contact with potentially dangerous insects at a flower or feeder,” said senior author Dr. Erin Wilson Rankin, a researcher in the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside.

Sometimes it’s just the feeling we recall

Posted by Robin on 1 September 2021 2 Comments

Interestingly, smell has the ability to elicit a strong emotional response without the recollection of an explicit memory. Sometimes it’s just the feeling we recall.

When you encounter a smell tied to something meaningful in your past, you first feel the emotion followed by a cognitive recognition, information that was stored in your brain. Often that happens quickly, but sometimes it doesn’t happen at all, and other times it can happen after some extensive searching in your brain, Herz says.

— Cognitive neuroscientist Rachel Herz talks to Prevention. Read more in The Fascinating Reason Certain Smells Trigger Powerful and Emotional Memories.
