Unpleasantness in the brain

Posted by Robin on 31 May 2022 Leave a Comment

"The representation of unpleasantness in the brain emerged earlier than pleasantness and perceived quality," said Project Associate Professor Masako Okamoto, also from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences. When unpleasant odors (such as rotten and rancid smells) were administered, participants' brains could differentiate them from neutral or pleasant odors as early as 300 milliseconds after onset. However, representation of pleasant odors (such as floral and fruity smells) in the brain didn't occur until 500 milliseconds onwards, around the same time as when the quality of the odor was also represented.

— Researchers at the University of Tokyo used EEG to look at when and where odors are processed in the brain. Read more in Seeing how odor is processed in the brain at ScienceDaily.

Disgusting, repulsive or dirty

Now scientists have identified a highly potent odour molecule that appears to be a trigger for the sense of disgust experienced by many of those with parosmia. The molecule, called 2-furanmethanethiol, found in coffee, was described by those with a normal sense of smell as being coffee- or popcorn-like, but those with parosmia typically described its scent as disgusting, repulsive or dirty.

Lifelong preferences

One of the most interesting studies Gary Beauchamp ever saw, he says, was done a few decades ago among the Inuit, who live in Arctic and sub-Arctic Greenland, Canada and Alaska. “Their traditional food back then was dead fish and dead caribou,” he reports, “which they put into the permafrost and allowed to rot. The smell of it … it was just abominable. Awful. You couldn’t eat it.” But the study showed that Inuit adults who’d been fed the carrion as infants liked the taste; otherwise, they found it offensive. That accords with other studies by Beauchamp showing that early exposure to foods through amniotic fluid and breast milk induces lifelong preferences.

OVR Technology is already being utilized in therapeutic settings. Ascendant New York, a $3,500-a-day substance disorder clinic, offers patients guided meditations via Inhale Wellness, OVR’s mindfulness platform released in November 2021, which beams users into a nature setting and emits 0.1-millisecond bursts of scent in relation to their VR interactions.

The lingering scent of a passenger’s tuna sandwich

Posted by Robin on 13 May 2022 Leave a Comment

An AI-powered nose could help robotaxi operators sniff out problematic odors — like the lingering scent of a passenger's tuna sandwich — and reroute the vehicle to a maintenance hub for cleaning before its next ride.
