Stronger sense of smell

Posted by Robin on 10 December 2025 3 Comments

The research shows that the volume of this endocast closely tracks the number of intact odor-receptor genes an animal carries.

Bigger bulbs point to richer gene repertoires – and stronger sense of smell. That tight anatomical-genetic link opens a reliable window into the olfactory abilities of mammals across deep time.

Stress-reducing and mood-boosting

Pine contains compounds called terpenes, like α-pinene and limonene, which are touted in wellness circles for their stress-reducing and mood-boosting properties. Aromatherapy brands frequently promote pine essential oils with terms like “refreshing” and “uplifting,” suggesting there’s something inherently calming in the chemistry of the tree itself.

But that idea doesn’t hold up scientifically, according to [neuroscientist Dr. Rachel] Herz. She says the perception of scent occurs in the amygdala-hippocampal complex, otherwise known as the primary olfactory cortex. It is this mechanism that drives pleasant experiences around particular scents.

Silent receptors without known matches

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2025 4 Comments

Givaudan states that for 30 years, researchers struggled to study many of the receptors in a laboratory due to their low sensitivity, leaving silent receptors without known matches.

Human smell senses rely on 400 olfactory receptors, each working like a lock waiting for its scent molecule key. The company’s latest innovation has successfully activated previously unresponsive receptors, unlocked 20 specific human odor receptors, and detected natural scent molecules. It says that it is now possible to pinpoint specific odor molecules to particular receptors.

Challenge a foundational theory of how smell works

The marine whiff of ambergris. The citrusy tang of grapefruit. The must of “corked” wine. The human nose can detect a virtually infinite palette of odors, some at vanishingly low concentrations. But puzzlingly, our bodies only use about 400 receptor proteins to interpret them. Now, fragrance researchers in Switzerland have landed on a new way to study the proteins in the laboratory—and their results, they say, challenge a foundational theory of how smell works.

Low scores on a clinical scent-detection test

Posted by Robin on 26 September 2025 6 Comments

The results revealed that 80% of participants who reported a change in their smelling ability after having COVID-19 earned low scores on a clinical scent-detection test taken about two years later. Of this group, 23% were severely impaired or had entirely lost their sense of smell.

Notably, 66% of infected participants who did not notice any smelling issues scored abnormally low on the evaluation as well, the authors say.
