To reawaken these clothes through smell

Posted by Robin on 7 May 2024 2 Comments

To reawaken these clothes through smell, the team from Sissel Tolaas Studio extracted scent molecules from the fabrics, then used a microfilter to trap the air and moisture. Eventually, they analyzed the molecules to identify and replicate the smells. Some of the smells you’ll find include odors found in tobacco, bitter drinks, high-end skin products, roses, polluted environments, and toothpaste. The technology is so advanced, that it even determined aromas associated with human hair and human skin that had been in contact with a dog.

— Smell artist Sissel Tolaas created the fragrances for The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which runs May 10–September 2 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. One-hundred-and-fifty lighted Christmas trees — a mix of fraser and noble fir — will line the avenue’s sidewalks from 46th through 61st Streets, with mist scent diffusers from Scent Marketing Inc. dispersed across every few tree clusters to distribute the fragrance, which features notes of pomegranate, pine, cloves, cinnamon and mandarin orange.

The Lucky Chance diner

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2023 5 Comments

There’s nothing quite like moseying into a New York City diner for a juicy burger and crisp French fries, but have you ever been to a diner and been served … fragrance? Probably not. Chanel is taking over a diner in Williamsburg — 225 Wythe Avenue — to celebrate its nostalgic Chance fragrance.

— The Lucky Chance diner will be open in Brooklyn from September 8 through the 10th. Read more in Would You Eat Chanel Perfume? at The Cut, or make your reservation here.

A whiff of strawberry sweetness

A whiff of strawberry sweetness hits you as soon as you walk into “The Pink Bedroom,” an exhibit at the Museum of Sex in New York. The installation is a jumble of shocking pink objects (stuffed animals, makeup compacts, music boxes, shoes and sex toys) arranged around a bed made with pink sheets and pillows. But it also features a mishmash of smells: rose, baby powder and … is that cat pee?

The smell of banana

“Scent is difficult to control,” the gallerist said. There’s fear of odors spreading and contaminating other works, which is fair—following an early show by artist Camilla Nicklaus-Maurer, Keller had trouble getting the smell of banana out of his own clothes. These days, however, he’s equipped with a pump that can turn over the air inside the gallery within an hour.
