Providence Perfume Co Branch & Vine ~ fragrance review, plus a quick green fragrance poll

Posted by Robin on 13 August 2013 95 Comments

Providence Perfume Co Branch & Vine, bottle plus greeneryProvidence Perfume Co Branch & Vine, bottle plus greenery

Providence Perfume Co has fast emerged as one of my favorite indie natural brands. I don’t like everything they make — Mousseline Pêche was not my cup of tea, and neither was Moss Gown, which sounded like it ought to be my cup of tea. Branch & Vine, their latest release, might as well have been tailor-made to suit my preferences, and to suit this time of year, when summer is winding down and I’d just as soon it lasted a bit (ok, much) longer.

Branch & Vine was inspired by a summer garden — “Verdant leafy greens, a tangle of tomato vine. Hints of muguet mingle with mimosa, jasmine and cooling violet leaf” — and that’s just what it smells like: greenery, not too bitter and not too heavy, sweetened by a few flowers along the way…

Andrea Maack Coal, Jimmy Choo Flash, Strange Invisible Perfumes Likewise ~ quick fragrance reviews

Several quick reviews of recent(ish) fragrances: Andrea Maack Coal, Jimmy Choo Flash, Strange Invisible Perfumes Likewise.

Feel free to add your own quick reviews of recent releases in the comments!

Andrea Maack Coal

Andrea Maack Coal

Coal is Reykjavík-based artist Andrea Maack’s sixth fragrance, and it was inspired by one of her drawings made with black coal:

It captures the feeling of creating this piece, the smudge on the fingertips, the coal falling down the white paper as the hand moves creating a pattern and the broken pieces at the bottom of the page.

If that sounds a little weird in a Comme des Garçons kind of way, then you’ve got exactly the right idea…

Providence Perfume Co + Jonathan Joseph Peters Mousseline Peche ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 1 August 2013 10 Comments

Providence Perfume Co + Jonathan Joseph Peters Mousseline Peche

Mousseline Pêche is a recent collaboration between indie perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co and Providence-based fashion designer Jonathan Joseph Peters. It’s inspired by the fabric mousseline de soie (silk muslin) and its composition includes notes of yuzu, pink grapefruit, rosewood, peach accord, ylang ylang, rose otto, tonka, vetiver and spun sugar (natural maltol).

I’m not familiar with Peters’s designs (I’ve never even seen Project Runway, on which he appeared in 2010), but I’ve tried several other fragrances from Providence Perfume Co over the past two years, and Mousseline Pêche is my new favorite. When we smell Mousseline Pêche, we’re meant to imagine a sun-ripened peach, a dress of pale peach-colored mousseline and warm skin, and the fragrance really does make all this possible. It’s warm and bright and gentle, and it’s a worthy reminder that “fruity florals” can indeed be beautiful…

Roxana Illuminated Perfume Chiaroscuro ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 12 July 2013 10 Comments

Roxana Illuminated Perfume Chiaroscuro, brand image

There are several ways to think about fragrance when you’re caught in the middle of a summer heat wave. You can wear a light, all-over splash, like a traditional Eau de Cologne or Florida Water. You can, as Angie recently suggested, embrace the strong heat and humidity with an equally bold perfume. Or you can take a middle road by wearing an all-natural scent that evokes nature itself without feeling too heavy on the skin. Two summers ago, I reviewed Roxana Illuminated Perfume‘s Aurora and To Bee; over the past week, I’ve been sampling a more recent release called Chiaroscuro.

“Chiaroscuro” is a term for a bold contrast of light and darkness in visual art, especially when the contrast results in strong modeling of forms and a dramatic atmosphere. Caravaggio is known for his use of chiaroscuro, as is Georges de la Tour (whose paintings of Mary Magadene are particular favorites of mine). Roxana Illuminated Perfume has taken this word, which translates literally from Italian as “light-dark,” as the name for a jasmine-based botanical perfume. As the description for this fragrance reads, “Chiaroscuro is a shape shifter, she is both the beauty and the beast from mythical heroic stories. She is the light of the luminous moon and the darkness of the night…”
