A few business matters…

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2009 19 Comments

The Monday Mail, our weekly feature in which readers help other readers find fragrances they might like, will return from its “holiday break” next week. If you're already on the waiting list, you should hear from me soon; if you're not but you'd like to be, please wait — over the next week or so, I hope to post detailed instructions on how to apply. In my ongoing efforts to make this blog easier to run (and thus leave a little time for other life matters), in the future the Monday Mail will be a strictly reader-to-reader feature, that is, I'm no longer going to make any fragrance recommendations myself. I don't think that will be any great loss since you all did better than I did anyway.

I'm gearing up to move Now Smell This to WordPress under its own domain…

The Monday Mail ~ help Andrea find a wedding perfume

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2008 84 Comments

Cartas

Andrea is getting married in the UK next June. Like Rebecca, she's looking for her perfect wedding fragrance, something that will be special and always remind her of her wedding day. She says she's tried all the traditional wedding fragrances but none of them quite fit.

Andrea is in her 30s. She describes herself as shy on the whole, but she's bubbly and outgoing with people she already knows. Her style is classic and understated, although on lazy days she's in “jeans and Ugg boots”. She doesn't wear much jewelry. She says everyone expects her to be in a relatively plain fitted strapless wedding gown, but instead she's going for lace.

On the perfume front, Andrea likes creamy, powdery, soft scents, with floral notes and non-foody vanilla. Some of the scents she likes…

The Monday Mail ~ help Kirsten find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2008 71 Comments

Kirsten is searching for her perfect signature daytime perfume. She loves Dior's Hypnotic Poison (“it's really comforting and I think that's what I look for in a perfume”), but it's too heavy to wear to work, and her sister-in-law also wears it so it doesn't feel like it's “hers”. She bought quite a few new perfumes this year, none of which really turned out to work for her, and she's also tried an amazing number of samples and decants — you might want to grab a cup of coffee before you start reading.

Here are a few details about Kirsten:

She's in her late 30s, married, and mother to a young girl.

She works as a Quality Manager for a manufacturing company, and she does spend time on the factory floor “getting really hands-on dirty”.

She describes herself as “a bit of a tom-boy”, and her style is casual but she likes to smell feminine.

Kirsten says smell is really important to her: “From my daughter’s fresh blow-dried hair, evening flowers in the garden, the smell of chocolate, honey & good coffee – it’s all about comfort scents…”

The Monday Mail ~ help Rhonda find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2008 70 Comments

Rhonda is our subject today. Rhonda is a petite brunette in her 50s and “in the throes of menopause”, and therein lies her perfume problem: her sense of smell has “intensified tremendously”. All of her old perfume loves no longer suit, so she'd like our help.

Up until a couple years ago, Rhonda wore Dolce & Gabbana's By Woman, and she found it “just about perfect”. Now, it smells intolerably sweet to her. She also liked Bond no. 9's New Haarlem and some of the Montale Aouds, but they're likewise now too intense, too sweet, too flowery or too vanilla.

She'd like a new wood or spicy fragrance that doesn't make her gag, and she'd like her new scent to be $100 or less…

The Monday Mail ~ help Asya find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2008 54 Comments

MailboxThis week, we're helping Asya, who lives in California. In her own words:

I'm currently a college student that loves to have some sort of scent on me from morning to night. I can't say I've been properly-versed in the wonderful world of perfumery; my knowledge basically includes years and years of walking up and down department store and Sephora perfume aisles going, “This I like,” “This is yuck.”.

Asya says her style is classic and feminine, “more Jackie than Marilyn”, with a bit of tousled beach style thrown in. Asya wants to find a more interesting scent than what she has now. Her perfect perfume would be noticeable but not too strong, young but classic, and easy to find…
