The Monday Mail ~ help Parul find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 16 May 2011 42 Comments

post box, Melaka, Malaysia

Today we’re helping Parul. Parul has found her holy grail in Chanel Coco Mademoiselle; now she’s looking for the perfect scent for hot weather. Ideally, her new perfume would cost less than $90. She has good access to mainstream perfume stores and she is willing to buy online. Here is what we know about Parul:

She’s a graduate student in her mid 20’s.

She loves shopping, literature, rainy days, American history, peppermint tea, and movies with Jimmy Stewart or Bette Davis.

Parul likes gourmand notes if they aren’t loud and screechy. She also likes white florals, ylang ylang, blood orange, mango, jasmine, magnolia, and honeysuckle…

The Monday Mail on Tuesday ~ help Mariclare find a budget perfume

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2011 59 Comments

post box, Melaka, Malaysia

It is not the first time I’ve forgotten to post the Monday Mail on Monday, and it probably won’t be the last. So here it is, a day late but better late than never.

Today we’re helping Mariclare, who is on a stricter budget than most of our participants: she wants to find her perfect casual, everyday scent for $40 or under. Can it be done? Her dream fragrance would be unusual, unconventional and not easily recognizable, but she’d also like it to be pleasant and not overbearing (no major sillage). A perfume she can find at Macy’s is a big plus, but she’s willing to shop online if need be. Here is what we know about Mariclare:

She’s in her late 20s. She works full time, and goes to school (to study painting) part time.

She lives with her boyfriend, and she says they’re both “a little eccentric”.

Mariclare says her personality is bright — “people are always telling me i have the best and most infectious laugh”.

Her style is eclectic: she enjoys combining colors and styles (floral skirts with motorcycle boots, vintage baby doll dresses with moccasins & thrift-store earrings).

Mariclare usually wears perfume oils because they’re inexpensive…

The Monday Mail ~ help Tom find a new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 18 April 2011 41 Comments

post box, Melaka, Malaysia

Before we start with today’s victim, I did want everyone to know that the Monday Mail will be taking a quick spring break. After today, no Monday Mail for 2 weeks, then it will return on May 9.

So, today we’re helping Tom. Tom says he is a relative newcomer to fragrance appreciation. He wants to find a summer fragrance that will work for hot, humid Montreal. It should be interesting and slightly masculine, and should wear well for work, clubbing, art shows, or…? And it would be great if it was also a contrast to the scents he already owns. He can spend around $100.

Here is what we know about Tom:

He’s in his late 20s, and works in the creative industry (ad agency/freelance journalism).

He describes himself as “very quirky”, and he likes independent designer clothing and Asian fashion.

He loves music, clubbing, art shows, bistros, and he skateboards and cycles. He’s also well-traveled, and interested in politics.

Tom likes John Varvatos Artisan…

The Monday Mail ~ help Jeremy find a new fragrance

Today we’re helping Jeremy, who needs a new “all around scent”. Jeremy says he tends to devote himself to a fragrance for a few months and then move on, and he’s only just recently started to look beyond department store options. His perfect fragrance will have good lasting power, feel young and fun, and move past the citrus/aquatic scents he already knows and loves. He doesn’t care if it is marketed to men or women — he says he’ll wear anything so long as it doesn’t require shoulder pads. His price limit is $200, and he has excellent access to perfume stores. Here is what we know about Jeremy:

He’s in his early 30s and recently moved to Seattle.

His passions outside of work are baking desserts, swimming (he says he’s a “beach kid”), art deco and graphic design. His drink: a vodka cranberry.

Jeremy likes ripe citrus, lavender, fruits (especially berry) and leather…

The Monday Mail ~ help Lizzie find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 4 April 2011 83 Comments

Today we’re helping Lizzie. Six months ago she gave birth to a son, and she wants to celebrate this new chapter in her life with a new perfume. She hasn’t worn perfume since she became pregnant, and she says her body chemistry may have changed because some of her old favorites don’t smell quite right. She wears perfume for her own pleasure and applies lightly. Her new perfume should be beautiful but also intellectually stimulating. It should also have some “space” to it — she doesn’t like to feel crowded by her fragrance — but she doesn’t want anything “fresh”. She can spend up to $200, but is also happy to buy decants so don’t worry about the price. Here is what we know about Lizzie:

She lives in Australia, and shares her time between country and city living.

She’s a single mom in her early 30s.

She studied art at school, and now she works in “student wellbeing” at a high school.

She says she is calm, positive, creative and a homebody; her style is “comfortable and simple but with bohemian and quirky handmade touches”.

Lizzie likes most floral notes…
