Gucci by Gucci ~ perfume review

Gucci by Gucci fragrance for women

In Angela’s recent article on Becoming a perfumista, she identified four stages along the road from newbie status to curating a personal collection of 300+ perfumes: strong interest, beginning perfume mania, full-blown perfume mania and connoisseurship. I’d like to add a fifth: rampant cynicism. This comes, I think, of already owning enough perfume to scent a small town for the foreseeable future, and then not only looking for more fragrances that you might conceivably love and want to own, but also trying (in vain) to keep track of all the new perfume releases and to smell as many of them as you can possibly manage.

You can tell you’ve reached stage five when almost everything you read about a new fragrance makes you either laugh out loud or roll your eyes, depending on your mood. I must have been “in a mood” the day I first read about the new Gucci by Gucci, because I remember rolling my eyes. Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini was said to have “unleashed her affinity for masculine notes” — yeah, right. I’ve heard that nonsense before. And “modern chypre” gets an eye roll from me no matter what mood I’m in. The commercial didn’t help — I’m a David Lynch fan, but his spot for Gucci by Gucci struck me as silly…

Pucci Vivara perfumeThe Emilio Pucci brand, currently owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, is celebrating its 60th anniversary (see articles in the International Herald Tribune and The Telegraph) and as part of the festivities, is reviving a 1966 Pucci perfume called Vivara. The chypre fragrance has been updated by perfumer Francois Demachy:

But the new Vivara is a more modern chypre, said Demachy…

Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, some final thoughts on the Les Exclusifs, and a little poll

Posted by Robin on 12 March 2007 77 Comments

Chanel 31 rue Cambon fragrance, Les ExclusifsCoco Chanel apartment at 31 Rue Cambon

Coco Chanel lived at the Ritz for most of her life, but she kept an apartment above her boutique at 31 Rue Cambon “as a place to house her own clothes and host dinner parties” (via travelandleisure):

The décor is ornate and baroque with the artefacts ranging from lacquered Coromandel screens with Chinese paintings to elaborate life size models of deer ranged in front of the fire place. The mirrors have elaborate oversize frames while the chandeliers replicate the double “C” symbol used as a brand logo in most products including bags and belts. Everything in the rooms reflects the concept of duality in her products with nearly each antique or display piece having a twin beside it. (via thehindu)

31 Rue Cambon, the apartment’s namesake fragrance from the recent Les Exclusifs collection, is likewise ornate…

Iris Nobile Eau de Parfum by Acqua di Parma: fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 4 October 2006 33 Comments

Iris Nobile Eau de Parfum by Acqua di Parma

Acqua di Parma launched Iris Nobile in 2004, and the original version, in Eau de Toilette concentration, is one of my favorite summer perfumes, a beautiful blend of iris and orange blossom with just a hint of anise. This year, Acqua di Parma follows up with an Eau de Parfum version that puts a chypre twist on the original formula. Notes include bergamot, tangerine, iris, star anise, ylang ylang, oakmoss, vanilla, amber crystals and patchouli.

As you would expect, the Eau de Parfum is a denser, richer fragrance than the Eau de Toilette…

Perfume review: Miss Dior Cherie by Christian Dior

Posted by Robin on 13 September 2005 130 Comments

Riley Keough for Miss Dior Cherie

Miss Dior Chérie was launched this year by Christian Dior’s haute couture and womenswear designer, John Galliano, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Christian Dior’s birth. The fragrance was created by nose Christine Nagel and has notes of mandarin, strawberry leaf, violet, jasmine, caramel popcorn, wild strawberry sorbet, musk, and patchouli.

Galliano was said to have found the inspiration for Miss Dior Chérie in the Stevie Wonder song “My Cherie Amour” and in a Dior dress of the 1940s called “Chérie”. His fragrance, however, is calculated to attract a decidedly modern customer:

“I did not want to rebrand a classic, nor would the new Miss Dior want to wear a re-bottled Miss Dior. As fashion evolves so must its scent, she needs to have something that captures her in the moment of today,” he commented at the launch. (via cosmeticsinternational)

Miss Dior Chérie starts with very sweet strawberry punch and a brief flash of mandarin…
