The chicken or the egg

Perfumers owe their increasingly high profile to Frédéric Malle, whose nine-year-old luxury company, Editions de Parfum, was the first to celebrate perfumers by name. The black label on each bottle identifies the perfumer, like an author’s name on a book jacket.

On the one hand, perfume is a commodity, dominated by global brands and fashion houses, but on the other hand we're in a new golden age of perfume, driven by artisans who seek to create experiences rather than brands.

What do you think — do perfumers owe their increasingly high profile to Frédéric Malle? And is this "golden age of perfume" driven by artisans? Because in both cases I would have said it's all driven by consumers, and more specifically, by perfume-related consumer activity on the internets: the blogs, the fragrance forums, what have you.

Michael Edwards Fragrances of the World 2010Author Michael Edwards will release the 2010 edition of his yearly Fragrances of the World, known as “the fragrance bible”, in January.

The 26th edition lists over 7000 fragrances (around 800 more than the 2009 edition) classified by fragrance family. It is used by numerous retailers to help customers find fragrances they might like…

The Fragrance Finder

Hearst Magazines Digital Media will partner with fragrance mastermind Michael Edwards to create a comprehensive online fragrance database called the Fragrance Finder. With information and recommendations for roughly 6,500 fragrances, the site is designed to help consumers find their ideal scents.

It will be featured on web sites for various Hearst titles, including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Redbook, Seventeen, Town & Country and cosmogirl.com.

Too many perfume launches…

While innovative new packaging can create excitement around a brand, can it truly pick up a floundering market? Industry expert Michael Edwards identified 815 fragrance launches in 2007 in his Fragrances of the World 2008 book, compared with 581 in 2006. These numbers reiterate that while there is much talk in the industry about there being too many launches, nobody is willing to really address the problem. Perhaps it is finally time for the industry to put its money where its mouth is.
