The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell by Luca Turin

Posted by Marcello on 2 May 2006 4 Comments

Luca Turin The Secret of ScentUnderstanding how smell works is a bit like trying to fix a radio, with the premise that a) you have little knowledge of its components, and b) the darn thing didn't come with a wiring diagram. For seven decades, scientists have explored the various components of the olfactory system, and how they are connected to each other. But despite their hard work, the fundamental question has remained unanswered: how does our nose 'read' odorant molecules? Biochemist and perfume connoisseur Luca Turin thinks he cracked the code, and wrote a book about it: The Secret of Scent.

If you've read Chandler Burr's The Emperor of Scent (2003), you're familiar with the basics of Turin's theory of olfaction…

Perfume books: Luca Turin’s The Secret of Scent

Posted by Robin on 27 March 2006 2 Comments

Luca Turin's The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell is due for publication in the UK this May. Last July I posted a brief description of the book; now you can also read an excerpt at Faber & Faber or pre-order it at The Book Place (UK). Many thanks to Barry for the link! Update: see a review of The Secret of Scent.

Per Luca Turin, we can expect a US release under Harper Collins this November.

The Emperor of Scent: A Story of Perfume, Obsession, and the Last Mystery of the Senses, by Chandler Burr

Chandler Burr's The Emperor of ScentWith the exception of a handful of bestselling novels, books about fragrance rarely appeal to audiences outside the perfume community, and seldom raise controversy among their readers. The opposite is true for Chandler Burr’s The Emperor of Scent, which caused both a stampede and a stir as it hit the bookstores in 2003.

The Emperor of Scent tells the true story of Luca Turin, lecturer in biophysics (1993-2000) at University College London. Turin has developed a new theory of smell, which he attempts to bring under the attention of the academic community. His ideas on how smell works are radically different from those of the ‘established’ researchers in the field, and go against all principles by which manufacturers produce synthetic odorants. As Turin submits his paper to the renowned magazine Nature, his hopes for glory are clouded by a mist of opposition: the road to recognition proves to be long and arduous.

The resistence to Turin’s theory is the main theme in the second half of the book…

Luca Turin on The Secret of Scent

Posted by Robin on 29 July 2005 2 Comments

Luca Turin's next book, The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell, will be published in the UK next year by Faber & Faber. Those of you who have read Chandler Burr's Emperor of Scent, which described Turin's efforts to unlock the mystery of how smell works, are already familiar with the basics of the controversy between shape and vibration theorists (for background, see the links provided in my interview with Luca Turin). Turin's book will focus on the history of this controversy and pay homage to those before him who “got it right”, although as he acknowledges, the jury is still out on the matter…

Luca Turin joins the blogosphere…

Posted by Robin on 6 June 2005 36 Comments

Luca Turin has launched a new perfume blog, Perfume Notes. He explains…

Just over two years ago, the Swiss magazine NZZ Folio asked me to write a monthly 400-word column on perfume. I write it in English, and Berlin-based translator Robin Cackett turns it (brilliantly, they tell me) into German. I thought it would be fun to publish the originals in a blog. They will be updated at the same time as the Folio article, i.e. on the 6th of each month…
