L’Oreal SA, the world’s largest cosmetics maker, won a ruling from the European Union’s highest court that will allow it to block a group of perfume makers from marketing “smell-alike” versions of its fragrances.

Ebay wins again

A British court ruled Friday that Internet marketplace eBay is not liable for bogus beauty products sold on its Web site, dealing a blow to cosmetics company L'Oreal's legal campaign against the online auction giant.

A French court on Wednesday rejected a claim from the cosmetics company L’Oréal that the online auctioneer eBay was profiting from sales of counterfeit perfumes. The court said that eBay was making a reasonable effort to keep fake goods off its site.

L’Oreal wins case against copycat perfumes…

In a case that may have far-reaching implications for the perfume industry, L'Oreal has won a lawsuit against a company that copied the "olfactory architecture" of its fragrances:

A scent is a work of art just like a painting or a symphony, a French court has ruled in a case seen as a major victory in the battle against copycat fragrances.

After decades of failed attempts to copyright a particular perfume, cosmetics giant L'Oreal finally persuaded the court that its perfumes were entitled to the French droits d'auteur (authorial rights) that protect their creators from imitation for 70 years.
