L’Occitane Ruban d’Orange ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2006 37 Comments

L'Occitane Ruban d'OrangeL'Occitane Ruban d'Orange

Ruban d’Orange is the latest fragrance from the L’Occitane en Provence chain, which is becoming very nearly as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Ruban d’Orange is being advertised with the tag line “bring sunshine to winter”, and has notes of Calabrian lemon, mandarin and sweet orange of Sicily, bitter orange of Seville, green fig, vetiver, tonka bean and cedar.

I am a citrus-lover, and have found two holy grail fragrances in this category already: Carthusia Mediterraneo for lemon, Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match for grapefruit. Lime and orange are still up for grabs, and orange seems particulary hard to do right, or at least to do right in a way that keeps your attention for more than 15 minutes…

Home fragrance: L'Occitane Amber Home Perfume Spray

L'Occitane Amber home fragrance

I have always loved the smell of amber in perfumery. Ages ago, I was told by a not-very-well-informed pharmacist-herbalist that amber aroma came from a tree — it was “just the resin” of a fragrant plant from India. I took him at his word until I went into a Beverly Hills aromatherapy boutique and asked for amber essential oil. The clerk grimaced and said: “There is no such thing.” Abashed, I did not ask for an explanation and one was not offered. Investigations commenced.

The scent of “amber” (as most of us know it) is an Indian creation — a blend of fragrant oils, waxes, gums, resins and powders. Amber is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a calming agent; its use relaxes one for enlightening meditation or…good sex. This fragrance blend may have been created to mimic the scent of rare and expensive ambergris — thus the name “amber” (derived from the Arabic word “anbar”, meaning “ambergris”). Amber recipes vary widely, but most contain benzoin, sandalwood, patchouli, and frankincense; myrrh, vetiver, agarwood, cedarwood, and any number of spices and floral notes may be added to the mix…

L’Occitane Eau des Baux fragrance review

L'Occitane Eau des Baux

I stopped in the L’Occitane store in the Pittsburgh airport the other day, really to do nothing more than kill time, only to be surprised by a host of new and re-released fragrances. Which was the scent that stole my heart and made the biggest impression? Easy: their newest fragrance for men, Eau des Baux; a blend of cypresswood and incense with hints of cardamom and coumarin.

Eau des Baux opens with an ambery blast that immediately reminds me of Nina Ricci Memoire pour Homme and L’Artisan Tea for Two…
