Tokyo Milk Waltz ~ fragrance & scented soap review

Posted by Jessica on 16 May 2009 68 Comments

Tokyo Milk Waltz 14 perfumeTokyo Milk Waltz Soap

Tokyo Milk is a small company with a delightfully inventive (and surprisingly affordable) line of fragrances called “Parfumarie Curiosite” [sic], as well as complementary perfumed soaps. Although I enjoyed reading the descriptions of all the scents in the line, the floral-lover in me was most drawn to Waltz Parfum 14 (formulation not specified, but probably an Eau de Parfum, shown above left) and Waltz Perfumed Soap (scented, somewhat confusingly, with a fragrance blend called “Minuet 14”, shown above right).

Photos don’t really do justice to the sweet packaging of these two products, especially their sepia-toned illustration of mid-nineteenth century dancers promenading in pairs along the length of a ballroom. The label of the perfume bottle is applied to the back of the bottle, so that the picture appears through the liquid of the fragrance itself, and the soap’s wrapper is highlighted with fine, iridescent glitter.

A historical note: when the waltz first gained popularity in genteel European society in late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it was considered daring and even immoral…

Roger & Gallet’s Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream, and some thoughts on linden

Posted by Pia on 1 June 2008 40 Comments

Linden blossoms

I first became aware of the delightful scent of linden blossom some years ago. I was having a lovely stroll in a nearby park, and as I meandered under the cover of some stately trees, a fresh and sweetly honeyed-green fragrance surrounded me, blending with the dappled late afternoon sunlight and the grounding scent of warm scuffed earth and stone. I later discovered that this was the well known linden blossom, lime blossom, or tilleul. It fast became a favorite of mine, particularly in home fragrances and body products. Quietly refreshing, its limber green structure is interwoven with a hint of tang and a gentle airy sweetness. In home fragrances in particular, I find it has a charm that is both elegant and fresh.

One of my all-time favorite linden body products is the Roger & Gallet Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream. Part of their Gentle Nature collection, this shower cream is enriched with shea milk…

He says/She Says: Parfums D’Orsay Tilleul

Posted by Robin on 18 July 2005 46 Comments

Parfums d'Orsay Tilleul / Linden fragrance

Count Alfred d’Orsay (1801-1852) was a French-born dandy, said to be the “most fashionable man in the most fashionable circles in the most fashionable town in the world: London” (Last of the Dandies: The Scandalous Life and Escapades of Count d’Orsay, by Nick Foulkes). He dabbled in perfumery; the Parfums d’Orsay line was launched after his death, reportedly using an original Count D’Orsay formula for a fragrance called “Eau de Bouquet”, now renamed Etiquette Bleue. I do not know the detailed history of the line, but they were issuing new fragrances into the the 20th century, and the line was “revived” in 1995.

Earlier versions of Tilleul were released in 1927 and 1955. The current reformulated version was created by Olivia Giacobetti. It features notes of lemon tree leaf, angelica, watermelon, lime blossom (aka linden or tilleul), cyclamen, cut hay, acacia wood and beeswax. Joining me once again for an opposing viewpoint is Marlen, one of the moderators on the basenotes forum…

L’Artisan Extrait de Songe / L’Ete en Douce ~ fragrance review

L'Artisan Extrait de Songe / L'Ete en Douce fragrance

Today I am testing the L’Artisan summer limited edition fragrance for 2005, Extrait de Songe (later renamed L’Ete en Douce, see below). The scent was created by nose Olivia Giacobetti, and features mint, rose, orange blossom, linden, hay, woods, and white musk.

Extrait de Songe starts with lightly sweet floral notes and a brief touch of mint…
