Thierry Mugler Angel a drug?, part 3

Posted by Robin on 10 December 2007 6 Comments

The background: The National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation (NTEF) has been campaigning (in the courts and in the media) against Clarins' Thierry Mugler Angel perfume. NTEF says Angel contains coumarin, and that coumarin is a "dangerous ingredient". See Thierry Mugler Angel a drug? and Thierry Mugler Angel a drug?, part 2.

Many of us wondered why they were picking on Angel, which is not the only perfume with coumarin. The answer, from a Clarins spokesman:

He said NTEF president Angel De Fazio had filed a lawsuit against Clarins in October 2004 claiming that one spray of the company's Angel Parfum had left her permanently disabled.

That lawsuit was dismissed earlier this year. Read more at Clarins defends itself against interest group attacks in Cosmetics Design.

Perfume in the news: Nicole Kidman & dogs

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2007 11 Comments

The article alleged that Kidman, who is the face and celebrity spokeswoman for Chanel No.5, had claimed that Jo Malone's White Jasmine and Mint was her favourite perfume.

It also alleged that the Moulin Rouge star had been "dabbing it on whenever she had a moment", when she was in London to promote her new film The Golden Compass.

— Nicole Kidman is suing the Daily Telegraph for saying she wears perfumes other than Chanel no. 5. Read more in The Guardian.

The dog fragrance is a manifestation of the luxe dog life in the last decade. “It’s the age of dog yoga, pet reiki, veterinary antidepressants, feline organ transplants, lumbar support pet beds, organic kibble, hand-stitched dog clothing boutiques and pet-toy manufacturing tycoons,” explained Michael Schaffer, a journalist who is writing a book about the nation’s obsession with dogs called “One Nation Under Dog,” to be published by Henry Holt.

Perfume lawsuit in Detroit

Posted by Robin on 5 July 2007 5 Comments

Another perfume lawsuit is in the works:

An employee in the Detroit planning department who claims she is severely sensitive to perfumes and other cosmetics has sued the city, saying a co-worker's strong fragrance prohibits her from working. [...]

''This employee not only wore a strong scent, but also plugged in a scented room deodorizer,'' the lawsuit states. ''Ms. McBride was overcome by the smell almost instantly, causing her to go home sick.''

Packaging dispute over Guerlain Insolence settled

Posted by Robin on 20 December 2006 4 Comments

Guerlain's Insolence bottle is safe. Jean-Claude Cardiet of Cardiet Designs has given up his lawsuit alleging that Guerlain copied one of his own bottle designs to use for their new fragrance:

Guerlain has always maintained French sculptor Serge Mansau, who designed the Insolence flacon, was inspired by a sculpture he created in 1973, as well as by other works he realized in 1996. The beauty firm had decided to appeal a French court judgment in October that ruled Guerlain had counterfeited Insolence's spiral glass bottle. (via Women's Wear Daily)

Guerlain Insolence in packaging dispute

Posted by Robin on 24 October 2006 8 Comments

A French court has ordered Guerlain to stop marketing Insolence in its current packaging:

Judge Claude Vallet, who deals with urgent cases at Paris’s Court of First Instance, found that the packaging by Serge Mansau, composed of three half-spheres atop each other, was too similar to a design registered by Jean-Claude Cardiet of Paris firm Cardiet Design…
