Mrs Meyers Clean Day Lavender Dish Soap ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Pia on 28 June 2008 18 Comments

Mrs Meyers Lavender dish soapSome of my first forays into the world of fragrance came through an interest in aromatherapy. I loved the idea that fragrance could be a source of healing as well as pleasure, and was enthralled with the concept of capturing some 'essence' of a plant or flower through distillation, for use in beauty, healing or massage.

I have therefore been delighted to see so many new natural and 'eco-friendly' cleaning product companies using essential oils to scent their products. It seems like a natural complement — many oils have disinfecting and antibacterial properties, as well as alleged psychological benefits, so why not combine them and be kind to the environment as well? Recently, the products have been getting increasingly sophisticated as well, with Seventh Generation coming up with rather delightful blends…

Do-It-Yourself Lavender Floral Water ~ scented body products

Posted by Lucy on 22 September 2007 19 Comments

Lavender

The old quiet, the old comfort of home. Not a sound but that of pattering rain in the still night. As always, the room smelt of lavender, blended with that indescribable fragrance which comes of extreme cleanliness in an old country house. (from Will Warburton by George Gissing)

Lavender has been somewhat over-exposed in mass market products, which far too often deliver only a symbolic representation of its true qualities. Making a flower water doesn’t take much time or effort and the results are more fragrant and effective…

Lavender & war: perfume in the news

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2006 13 Comments

It is lavender-harvest time in Provence. Read about the festivities in the New York Times.

An older but still interesting article in Popular Science discusses how the army is using the sense of smell to train soldiers:

Olfaction could be key. A number of researchers believe that smell, more than any other sense, can powerfully and immediately trigger emotions, memories and states of arousal—all of which, when manipulated adeptly, can boost the sense of immersion and thus the quality of training in VR [Virtual Reality]. In short, smellier simulators could produce smarter soldiers…

Penhaligon’s Lavandula fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 19 July 2006 11 Comments

Penhaligon's LavandulaPenhaligon's LavandulaPenhaligon's Lavandula

Having never been much of a lavender fan, it was with some trepidation that I approached Lavandula. Reminding myself that I had been won over time and time again by Penhaligon’s other fragrances (Hammam Bouquet, Endymion, etc) I also faced the first sniff with a modicum of optimism: would this be yet another yawner, or something unique and surprising? The answer: Whoa! With notes of basil, canella, pepper, lavender, lily, clary sage, musk, vanilla, amberwood and tonka bean, Lavandula is like nothing I’ve experienced before.

Lavender. The word conjures images of satin eye pillows, Yardley soap, and bitter, buttery blossoms. Let’s face it, lavender hardly tops anyone’s list as most provocative note, especially as a main note. There are exceptions of course, most notably Caron’s Pour un Homme and Lutens Encens et Lavande, but lavender just seems so…well, dull to me. So you can imagine my shock when I tested Lavandula and found not another boring elixir, but a great, heady brew of herbs and musk that strikingly portrays this most mundane of notes…

Home fragrance: Diptyque Feuille de Lavande (Lavender Leaf) Room Spray

Posted by Kevin on 15 July 2006 6 Comments

Diptyque Feuille de Lavande room fragranceIs there a room in your house with “bad breath” — a stuffy attic or closet, a damp basement, or maybe a hallway where the dogs sleep, or the nook where the litter box is kept? Even an entire house can suffer from architectural halitosis: a mountain cabin or beach house that’s been closed for months has a stale, musty smell. We’ve all entered a hotel room, inhaled too deeply, and smelled yesterday’s cigarettes and coffee, the previous guests’ hairspray or perfume that’s permeated the carpets, curtains, upholstery.

I have found the perfect “breath freshener” for such malodorous spaces and odeurs — Diptyque’s Feuille de Lavande (Lavender Leaf) Room Spray. It is bracing, astringent and energizing; it zaps the air of staleness…
