Roxana Illuminated Perfume Chiaroscuro ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 12 July 2013 10 Comments

Roxana Illuminated Perfume Chiaroscuro, brand image

There are several ways to think about fragrance when you’re caught in the middle of a summer heat wave. You can wear a light, all-over splash, like a traditional Eau de Cologne or Florida Water. You can, as Angie recently suggested, embrace the strong heat and humidity with an equally bold perfume. Or you can take a middle road by wearing an all-natural scent that evokes nature itself without feeling too heavy on the skin. Two summers ago, I reviewed Roxana Illuminated Perfume‘s Aurora and To Bee; over the past week, I’ve been sampling a more recent release called Chiaroscuro.

“Chiaroscuro” is a term for a bold contrast of light and darkness in visual art, especially when the contrast results in strong modeling of forms and a dramatic atmosphere. Caravaggio is known for his use of chiaroscuro, as is Georges de la Tour (whose paintings of Mary Magadene are particular favorites of mine). Roxana Illuminated Perfume has taken this word, which translates literally from Italian as “light-dark,” as the name for a jasmine-based botanical perfume. As the description for this fragrance reads, “Chiaroscuro is a shape shifter, she is both the beauty and the beast from mythical heroic stories. She is the light of the luminous moon and the darkness of the night…”

L’Occitane Collection de Grasse Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mure ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 23 April 2013 24 Comments

L'Occitane Collection de Grasse

La Collection de Grasse is a new quartet of fragrances from L’Occitane, and something of an introduction, perhaps, to the house’s newly announced in-house perfumer Karine Dubreuil (although she has developed fragrances for L’Occitane in the past, including Eau des Baux, L’Eau des 4 Reines and Myrte from the Notre Flore collection).

Today, reviews of Jasmin & Bergamote and Magnolia & Mûre; coming up on Thursday, Vanille & Narcisse and Thé Vert & Bigarade.

Jasmin & Bergamote

mandarin, bergamot, jasmine, lemon leaves, sandalwood and cedar

This is the one of the four I was most looking forward to, and it is in a fact a pretty enough, very wearable summer-weight floral. It’s a bit citrusy and a bit green (almost grassy), with a pale woody dry down. It’s not indolic, nor even a jasmine bomb…

Rodin Olio Lusso Perfume & Ko Denmark Jasmine + Neroli ~ perfume reviews

Posted by Robin on 5 June 2012 54 Comments

More jasmine! A quick run through the jasmine tag here at Now Smell This reveals that I’m the main jasmine freak in residence. If you’re not a jasmine freak, sorry, come back tomorrow.

Rodin Olio Lusso Perfume

Rodin Olio Lusso Perfume

I was curious about Rodin Olio Lusso Perfume for two reasons. One, it’s jasmine, and as I already made clear above, I’m nearly always interested in jasmine. Two, it was developed by perfumers DS & Durga, and I’m very fond of their bold, rustic-chic indie style.

The Olio Lusso Perfume is apparently meant to capture the aroma of the Rodin brand’s Luxury Face Oil, which I’ve never used. Now that I’ve tried the perfume, I’m pretty sure I could find a way to fit the oil (or the hand & body cream!) into my skincare routine if only I could afford it…

Flying Fox and It’s Raining Men ~ shower gels from Lush

Posted by Robin on 10 April 2012 68 Comments

Lush Flying Fox

When I reviewed Lush’s powdery jasmine fragrance, Silky Underwear, I mentioned that I had once splurged on their Flying Fox shower gel in the small size (100 ml, which looks sooo much smaller in shower gel than it does in perfume). I didn’t think I’d ever spend that much on shower gel again, but then I started to miss it. Lo and behold, now I have another bottle, along with a small bottle of It’s Raining Men.

Flying Fox is yet another one of Lush’s many jasmine bombs. I’m all out of their Jasmine & Henna Fluff Ease at the moment, so I can’t compare the fragrance, but Flying Fox is a big sweet honeyed jasmine with ylang ylang, and is probably at least vaguely related to their Lust perfume. The smell is strong and rich — really, almost too strong and rich — and so is the gel itself…

Lush Silky Underwear ~ perfume review

jasmine

They like jasmine over at Lush. Whenever I’m feeling particularly wealthy (a rare, and entirely delusional state) I pick up some of their Jasmine & Henna Fluff Ease hair pre-treatment (about $22 for 220g). My hair most certainly needs some pre-treatment, followed by some treatment and then perhaps some post-treatment, but I buy it for the (massive) wallop of jasmine, which lasts right through a shampoo (or two). Once, and only once, I bought a very small travel size of their Flying Fox shower gel ($10 for 100 ml, which mind you doesn’t look like nearly so much product in shower gel as it does in perfume) — another decent wallop of jasmine. And then there’s the Lust fragrance, which arguably out-jasmines both the Fluff Ease and the Flying Fox, and adds a hefty dose of candy to boot.

But their best known jasmine product is probably the Silky Underwear dusting powder. I love the smell,1 but I’m not a big user of dusting powder so I’ve never bought it. I was tempted when they released the same fragrance in a solid perfume,2 but I still didn’t bite…
