Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2007 18 Comments

Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint perfume

White Jasmine & Mint is the latest fragrance from UK niche line Jo Malone, and the second to launch since Jo Malone left the company. Said to be “inspired by a sun drenched morning in an English garden”, White Jasmine & Mint features notes of wild mint, peppermint, camomile, coriander, cardamom, bergamot, mace, cassis, “Jo Malone heirloom jasmine”, ylang ylang, orange flower, rose de mai, muguet, cedar, “Jo Malone musk”, mate absolut, vetiver, prune and guaiac wood.

If the long list of notes makes White Mint & Jasmine sound complicated or heavy, think again. This is a simple, summer-y jasmine tea fragrance, very fresh and clean and crisp. The herbs and spices, including the “unexpected twist of wild mint”, make quite a showing when the fragrance is sprayed on paper. On skin, they are prominent for only a very short time; blink, and you’ll miss any chance of identifying them separately. That is good news for those who find mint in fragrance uncomfortably reminiscent of chewing gum, but bad news for those (like me) who were hoping for something with a bit more of a kick to it…

Armani Prive Eclat de Jasmin by Giorgio Armani ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 18 September 2007 33 Comments

Armani Prive Eclat de Jasmin by Giorgio Armani

When Now Smell This first announced the release of Armani Privé Eclat de Jasmin, the blog quoted the Giorgio Armani website, saying “Eclat de Jasmin was created to represent dawn – the particular time of the day when jasmine flowers are warmed by the sun, releasing their deep, rich scent.” From this description I imagined a dew-like, non-indolic jasmine: fresh, liquid, and quiet.

Maybe because I don’t live where dawn is ever warm enough to draw the scent from jasmine, but Eclat de Jasmin feels like the late afternoon of a summer day to me…

More jasmine fragrances ~ L’Orientaliste, Montale, Fresh

Continuing with the jasmine fest, here are a few more worthy of consideration…

Jasmin Eau de Parfum by L’Orientaliste took me by surprise — I don’t know much about this line, but now I’d like to try more. Jasmin is a sort of middle-of-the-road soliflore, not so heavy and rich as Serge Lutens A La Nuit or Bruno Acampora Jasmin, nor so light and summery as the Chantecaille under consideration yesterday. The base is woody and warm and has a nice earthy finish, and a hint of spice in the dry down gives it a sultry feel after an hour or so. It is not a terribly complex fragrance, and I wouldn’t call it a powerhouse in terms of lasting power, but it is very nicely done and reasonably priced at $56 for 50 ml. If you’ve tried anything else by L’Orientaliste, do comment…

Chantecaille Le Jasmin ~ fragrance review

Chantecaille Le Jasmin perfume

If you love jasmine but find that fragrances like Serge Lutens A La Nuit or yesterday’s Jasmin by Bruno Acampora are a bit more jasmine than you bargained for (especially in the full heat of summer), there are plenty of lighter options. My own perfect summer jasmine is L’Artisan’s lovely if ephemeral Thé Pour Un Été, and then there is Annick Goutal’s fizzy Le Jasmin, or the sparkling and green Jasmin Vert by Miller Harris. For just a whisper of scent, there is the very soft Jasmin by Les Bains du Marais…

Bruno Acampora Jasmin ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 July 2007 13 Comments

Bruno Acampora Jasmin

Bruno Acampora is the proprietor of an Italian line of perfume oils about which I know basically nothing. His website “invites you to join him on a voyage of the senses that spanned forty years”, and according to Luckyscent, where the fragrances debuted earlier this year, the small aluminum bottles sealed with cork that house the perfumes are “unchanged in 30 years”, so apparently the house is not new, but it is certainly new to me. Today’s subject, Jasmin, was reportedly launched in 1978, and the notes include jasmine, cyclamen, cloves and ylang ylang.

Jasmin starts out rich and strong, and more than a little indolic. At first I worried that it might be more jasmine than I can stand — it very nearly outdoes Serge Lutens A La Nuit in the buried-alive-in-flower-petals category. Just as I was beginning to question the wisdom of testing it in July, of all times, it started to settle. A bit of stemmy green arrives to temper the floral notes, and then the ylang both sweetens and mellows the jasmine without overpowering it…
