Chanel Bois Noir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 3 February 2009 56 Comments

Chanel logo on tree bark

While reviewing Chanel Égoïste, I became obsessed with smelling its progenitor: Bois Noir. After reading my Égoïste review, two Now Smell This readers offered to send me samples of Bois Noir from their rare and precious bottles of the fragrance, and I accepted (both men had bought their bottles of Bois Noir at Chanel in Paris). I also purchased a small sample of Bois Noir from a trusted online vendor in case any of the samples had dramatically changed over the 22 years since they were bottled.

Bois Noir had a discreet launch in 1987…

Chanel Egoiste & Platinum Egoiste ~ fragrance review

Chanel Egoiste & Egoiste Platinum colognes for men

Chanel’s Bois Noir fragrance was created (circa 1986-87) because Chanel’s chairman of the board Alain Wertheimer “wanted something new to wear.”* Wertheimer’s marketing approach to Bois Noir was novel: Bois Noir was not sold in department stores (it was only available in Chanel boutiques); there were no promotions (such as “gift-with-purchase” offers; Wertheimer hated those); and he didn’t really care if Bois Noir was a money-maker for his company. Wertheimer spoke frankly in a 1987 interview and said there were few unusual fragrances like Bois Noir because — “People want success too quickly. From a fragrance point of view, people like what their memory tells them is good. Memory tells you it’s good if it relates to something else you like. When a fragrance is completely different, they’re lost.”*

By April of 1990, things had changed — Bois Noir’s name for one. Amidst a flashy (and expensive) print and film ad campaign — the largest ever for a Chanel men’s fragrance — Bois Noir (no doubt with some tweaking of its formula) became Égoïste and was widely launched: in department stores no less! In its advertisements, which included the now-famous Jean-Paul Goude TV commercial, Chanel didn’t use images of men…

A change in fashion

Posted by Robin on 15 October 2008 10 Comments

"No 5 has always been a very alive perfume in the company," [Jacques] Polge continues. "It is our job to protect the creation, and we make all types of effort in order that it remains the same. Every time there is a change in fashion or in women's habits of using perfume, instead of altering what already exists, we launch a new product. First came Eau de Toilette, then there was Eau de Parfum, and very soon there will be Eau Première."

Chanel Beige ~ perfume review

Chanel Beige fragance, Les Exclusifs

Such is the current pace of new fragrance launches that when I sat down to refresh my memory on the subject of Chanel’s niche range, Les Exclusifs de Chanel, I was surprised to see that they debuted only last year. It feels like they’ve been around much longer than that, but when you consider that there have been something like 3 new fragrance launches a day since then, they’re really rather old hat by now, aren’t they?

When I reviewed 31 Rue Cambon last year, I noted that…

A color of eternal elegance

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2008 25 Comments

Mademoiselle Chanel spoke of beige as a comfortable color, a color of eternal elegance, not à la mode but something that never goes out of style. My inspiration was to translate the idea of this color into a fragrance that was fresh and floral. My vision of the beige color came alive with the hawthorn note in accord with honey.

— Perfumer Jacques Polge on Chanel's latest release, Beige, quoted in Chanel "Nose" Jacques Polge at Vanity Fair. Thanks to zippy for the link!
