The Different Company Bois d’Iris ~ fragrance review

The Different Company Bois d'Iris perfumeThe Different Company Bois d'Iris perfume

Bois d’Iris was launched in 2000 by The Different Company, who reportedly gave nose Jean Claude Ellena and designer Thierry de Bashmakoff (who also designed the bottle for Bvlgari Black) carte blanche to create a unique line of luxury fragrances. Bois d’Iris features notes of iris, vetiver, bergamot, cedar, narcissus, geranium and musk.

Like yesterday’s Hiris, Bois d’Iris is an earthy fragrance, but it is a very different take on earthy. If Hiris is like a walk in the woods with a cool breeze blowing, the sensation of wearing Bois d’Iris is closer to being in an undergound tunnel, with the smell of damp wood and roots.

Bois d’Iris starts off peppery, but with none of the sharp edges that characterize the top notes of Hiris…

Hermes Hiris ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2005 68 Comments

Hermes Hiris fragrance

Hiris was released by Hermès in 1999. The name refers to the iris flower, but also to the goddess Iris, who like Hermes was celebrated in Greek mythology as a messenger of the gods. The fragrance was created by nose Olivia Giacobetti, who used iris in the top, heart, and base notes, along with neroli, carrots, coriander, hay, rose, ambrette seeds, almond wood, cedar, honey, and vanilla.

The opening notes are simply stunning: crisp, dry and peppery iris, with lots of dirt-caked roots and greenery. I did not recognize the carrot note until I smelled L’Artisan Fleur de Carotte, and so learned what a carrot translated into perfumery smells like. Yes, there is carrot in Hiris too, although only for a brief while. As it dries down, the high pitched, almost metallic hum of the top notes calms, and the hay and wood notes intensify, along with a tiny whisper of rose…

Dior Homme by Christian Dior ~ fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 14 September 2005 27 Comments

Dior Homme fragrance advert with Jamie Dornan

With fond memories of Christian Dior’s last big launch — Higher — I have excitedly been awaiting my sample of their newest men’s Eau de Toilette, Dior Homme. Touted by Dior as a “masculine iris, a ‘skin’ fragrance with an addictive grace,” it is the 4th fragrance to be launched by Dior’s new artistic director for men’s fragrance, Hedi Slimane. It was created by Olivier Polge, and has notes of sage, bergamot, lavender, Italian iris concrete, cocoa, amber, vetiver, patchouli, and possibly leather and cardamom.

While the bottle is being described as a unique design, with a steel column housing the usual plastic spray tube, the fragrance, with its iris and cocoa notes, is being described as a composition that does not conform to current trends in men’s perfumery. I have to disagree. The best way to describe the overall effect of Dior Homme is “sweet”. Like Hanae Mori Men a decade ago, like Yohji Homme 5 years ago, and like Nikos Homme last year, Dior Homme is a men’s gourmand and shares similarities with all three…

She says/He Says: Miller Harris Terre d’Iris

Posted by Robin on 2 September 2005 15 Comments

Miller Harris Terre d'Iris perfume

Today Marlen and I are discussing Terre d’Iris, one of the scents in the Miller Harris Nouvelle Edition line. The notes for Terre d’Iris are bergamot, bitter orange, southern herbs, rosemary, clary sage, orange flowers, rose, patchouli, tree moss, fir balsam and iris.

He says: Being a huge fan of Iris, especially the warmer, more buttery notes, I recently swapped for Terre d’Iris, described to me by the swapper as “Miller Harris Terre de Bois meets Hermès Hiris.” I was surprised by how much I love this scent at first testing, and subsequent wearings have only increased my enthusiasm. What I get is a rich, deep, buttery iris note…
