Alberto Morillas on iris

Posted by Robin on 15 April 2007 Leave a Comment

He decided to start his seventh creation for Bulgari with not the root but the scent of the iris flower.

“I wanted to create a contemporary iris flower perfume, captured through the nature print technique in association with a new, special woody molecule, and not only on the iris absolute.

“So, I combined the scent of the iris flower with the marvellous natural Bulgarian rosebud.”

— Perfumer Alberto Morillas quoted in Scent of a freshly manicured garden, talking about the creation of Omnia Amethyste.

Les Exclusifs de Chanel: 28 La Pausa fragrance review

28 La Pausa, like yesterday’s subject, Bel Respiro, is one of the new niche fragrances from Chanel’s Les Exclusifs de Chanel. It was also named for one of Coco Chanel’s houses, in this case, an estate on the French Riviera outside Roquebrune Cap Martin:

Chanel spent her vacations at La Pausa, surrounded by friends including the Duke of Westminster, Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau, in an atmosphere of happy relaxation and refinement. “Irises grew in the garden and the iris is also a very round, calm and soft fragrance,” [perfumer Christopher] Sheldrake says. (via theaustralian)

I have not seen a list of notes anywhere, but it doesn’t matter: 28 La Pausa is all about iris, and if you love iris as I do, it is a must-try…

Apothia L Eau de Parfum fragrance review

Apothia L Eau de Parfum fragrance

As the year draws to a close, I am desperately trying to clear out my massive backlog of untried or partially tried fragrance samples. Unless something is so horrible that it necessitates instant removal (i.e., a scrubber), my practice is to try everything at least twice, and if it warrants a review (that is, if I can think of something to say about it) I usually give it 3-5 tries. But there are many fragrances that just don’t capture my attention one way or another on the first try, and they tend to spend months in the purgatory of the “try again some day” basket. Such was the fate that befell L Eau de Parfum, the fragrance inspired by the Showtime series The L Word and launched by Apothia earlier this year.

L Eau de Parfum was created by perfumer Yann Vasnier and includes notes of angelica, juniper, cardamom, violet leaf, Florentine orris butter, vetiver, sandalwood, musk and crystal amber…

Iris Nobile Eau de Parfum by Acqua di Parma: fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 4 October 2006 33 Comments

Iris Nobile Eau de Parfum by Acqua di Parma

Acqua di Parma launched Iris Nobile in 2004, and the original version, in Eau de Toilette concentration, is one of my favorite summer perfumes, a beautiful blend of iris and orange blossom with just a hint of anise. This year, Acqua di Parma follows up with an Eau de Parfum version that puts a chypre twist on the original formula. Notes include bergamot, tangerine, iris, star anise, ylang ylang, oakmoss, vanilla, amber crystals and patchouli.

As you would expect, the Eau de Parfum is a denser, richer fragrance than the Eau de Toilette…

Ormonde Jayne Orris Noir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 21 August 2006 31 Comments

Ormonde Jayne Orris Noir perfume

Orris Noir is the latest fragrance from the London boutique Ormonde Jayne. Orris Noir is named for the Black Iris of Amman, Jordan’s national flower, and the notes feature davana (an aromatic herb also used in Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus), pink pepper, coriander seed, cardamom, bergamot, iris, jasmine sambac absolute, pimento berries, bay, saffron, incense, myrrh, patchouli, cedar and gaiac wood.

Orris Noir starts with a good dose of the pink pepper that appears in several other Ormonde Jayne fragrances, and is especially noticeable in Ta’if and Isfarkand. The spiciness picks up speed as it dries down and the other notes join in…
