A wellness provider

Posted by Robin on 2 March 2022 Leave a Comment

We have moved pretty far away from the superficial, social role that fragrance has had over the last 200 years. Scent has gone back to being used, as it was thousands of years ago, for health and healing; people are expecting much more from it. Over the last two years, 80% of the people we’ve surveyed have said they want emotional and physical benefits from scent; they are using it as a wellness provider.

— Psychologist Dr Céline Manetta of International Flavors & Fragrances, quoted in The importance of fragrance after the pandemic at Good Housekeeping.

Vile and sickening

The suit says the offensive odors are a byproduct of the factory’s manufacturing process, which strips fouls-smelling sulfur compounds from crude sulfate turpentine. The end result is a product that can be used for everything from sweet smelling candles to plug-in air freshers. But the extracted sulfur odor is “vile and sickening,” according to the lawsuit --- and as anyone who has smelled it can attest.

The (almost) daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2020 14 Comments

Speed smelling is so 2019. This year, IFF is going slow, with "... the theme of “Luxury, Calm, and Pleasure” (after Baudelaire’s “Invitation to the Voyage”). The luxury of creation without looking at price tags. The re-connection to oneself and to suspended time. The rekindled pleasure of re-learning what they already knew, seeing with fresh eyes, away from the frantic trance of day to day. Join them in the Slow Smelling, close your eyes and partake in their imagined worlds: Luxury, Calm, and Pleasure, indeed." Slow Smelling 2020, with 10 ml fragrances by Fanny Bal, Nicolas Beaulieu, Caroline Dumur, Jean-Christophe Hérault, Bruno Jovanovic, Juliette Karagueuzoglou, Delphine Lebeau, Domitille Michalon-Bertier, Julien Rasquinet, Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion, $185 at Luckyscent.
